Easy English expression rehashed.
Hello, everybody.
My name is Coach Shane and welcome to Easy English Expressions.
Come on, let's master English.
Coach Shane coming at you with E-Cubed number 347.
I love this word.
It's just a word, but you can use it in several different situations.
I announced yesterday you can join lessons.
Our community is free, but we have lessons, actual lessons that you can get, including live one-on-one pronunciation training, for only 8 a month.
Where?
In my community.
If you have a question, ask.
Join the community, school.com slash LME.
That's S-K-O-O-L dot com slash L-M-E.
Let's go back in time.
Today's expression is a fun one.
It's one word.
It is yikes.
Yikes.
Yikes.
Y-I-K-E-S.
That's it.
Yikes.
Now, when do we use this word?
Well, we can use it when we're scared.
So, for example, a couple months ago I had the chance to visit the Grand Canyon in America in the state of Arizona.
It was amazing.
But As I was walking along a trail, I looked down into the canyon and it's right there.
There's no fence.
There's no protection.
It's just down, down, down, down.
I'm not joking. thousands of feet, hundreds of meters.
It's like so scary.
And when I looked, I said, yikes.
Oh, yikes.
It was so scary.
When I was in high school, I lived in the north and in the wintertime we always have snow and ice on the roads.
Well, one day I was driving, and as I was turning left, suddenly my car started to spin on the ice.
I thought, oh my God, I'm going to hit a tree, and I'm going to die.
So I said, yikes!
Fortunately, nothing happened.
Ha!
No accident.
And the car stopped spinning.
And I was lucky.
But I was really scared.
So I said, yikes.
And we can also use it in more daily situations.
Like in the dialogue.
Check it out.
Shane, I want you to give the opening speech.
Oh, okay.
How long should it be?
60 minutes.
Yikes.
How many people will be there?
Around 600.
Yikes.
Can you imagine your boss tells you to create a speech, to do a speech for one hour?
For most people, that sounds very scary.
One hour.
Oh, my goodness.
Yikes.
That's huge.
That's a scary amount.
Oh, that's not easy.
In front of how many people?
Six people?
Okay.
60 people?
Ooh.
600 people?
Yikes.
Oh, my God.
That sounds really scary.
Yeah, absolutely.
Absolutely.
It is scary.
You know, when I started doing Daily Easy English, I was thinking okay, so how long should I do this?
Should I do like one month, like 30?
Should I do six months?
Should I do one year, 365 expressions?
And then one of my students, his name is Saad, he said, why don't you do 1,000?
So I said, okay, yeah, I'll do 1,000.
But then after I said yes, I was thinking, a thousand?
Yikes.
That's a lot.
That's not easy.
That's kind of a scary number.
Well, we're doing it.
Today, what is this?
342 on the podcast.
We're up to like, I don't know, over 700 in the videos.
And we're doing it.
We're almost to 1,000 for the videos.
But we got over two more years to go for the podcast.
So there you go.
For sure, if you like this podcast, don't worry.
It's going to be here for at least another two years.
Are you going to be able to listen every day for two years?
Oh, yikes.
That sounds like a lot.
It's kind of scary.
It's a great word.
When can you use the word yikes?
Hopefully not in such a scary situation, but in kind of a fun situation.
That's it, everybody.
Thank you so much for listening again.
And together, let's master English.
