Oh, suddenly I'm thinking of a song from Wham from a long time ago.
Jitterbug.
Check out today's podcast.
Let's go back in time.
Today's expression is excellent.
It's funny because last week... No, two weeks ago, we studied this word in DDM.
And my students mastered the word.
So if you're a DDM student, you will know this word.
This word is...
Litterbug.
Litterbug.
Don't be a litterbug.
Oh my god, I hate litterbugs.
Are you a litterbug?
Hmm, what is a litterbug?
It's one word.
L-I-T-T-E-R-B-U-G.
Bug, B-U-G.
Do you know what a bug is?
A bug is an insect.
I don't like bugs like a cockroach or a cricket or a grasshopper.
Yeah, I don't like bugs.
Did you know that actually one time I ate a grasshopper?
Yes, I did.
It was crunchy.
It was pretty good.
But I will never, ever, ever, ever, ever eat another grasshopper.
I don't like bugs.
I hate bugs.
If I'm at home and I see a cockroach, I will move to another home.
I hate bugs.
All right, so litter bug, is it a good word or a bad word?
It's probably a bad word.
Litter, L-I-T-T-E-R, what is litter?
Litter is trash, garbage.
Especially trash or garbage that somebody throws onto the street, onto the ground.
They don't care where they throw their trash.
That trash on the street is litter.
And the person who throws the trash onto the street is a litter bug.
And I'm serious.
I do not like litter bugs.
I don't care if it's in the city and you want to say oh, but somebody cleans the streets, so we have to give them a job.
Uh-huh.
Right.
Okay.
I don't know.
To me, it just sounds lazy.
Now, this is a problem.
I understand what if there is no trash can.
There's no garbage.
What do you do with your trash?
Well, in my case, I keep it.
I keep it until I find a place to throw it away.
I'm serious.
Now, I don't know.
I haven't been to many countries.
Maybe in some countries...
You just cannot find a trash can.
Maybe that's possible.
So I don't know.
I guess I'll tell you, though, we all litter sometimes, you know, by accident.
Even like I remember when I used to smoke and I was driving down the road.
Sometimes the cigarette would fall out of my hand onto the street.
Sometimes i'm not gonna stop and pick it up.
So yeah, i littered, i was a litter bug.
But a litter bug is somebody who does it intentionally.
They don't care.
They don't care.
They go hiking in the mountains, throw away their garbage.
They go fishing and into the lake they throw away their garbage.
Oh, If I see a litterbug and I have a gun, I might shoot that person.
Let's check out the dialogue.
Hey, litterbug!
Huh?
Oh, it's just a cigarette butt.
Use your pocket!
Sorry.
You bet.
I smoked.
And when I was a smoker, I always, if there was no trash can, no ashtray, I put the cigarette butt into my pocket.
Yes, I did.
My pockets sometimes would be filled with cigarette butts.
But yeah, I did.
I can't throw away trash onto the ground.
I can't do it.
Now I'm going to give you a secret.
This is a very embarrassing secret.
My dad smokes.
He's an old man, but he still smokes.
And my dad always uses an ashtray.
Well, almost always.
I have seen my dad throw his cigarette butt onto the ground.
And I about died.
I didn't say anything.
He's my dad.
He's been doing that for 50, 60 years.
But inside, I was like, oh my God, that's so terrible.
Yeah, I don't know.
Maybe if it's your habit, it's difficult to break.
But seriously, keep it clean.
You know, global warming and the environment, everybody likes to talk about that.
Well, especially if you believe in global warming and you litter?
That's wrong.
That's just completely wrong.
Now for me.
I don't necessarily believe in global warming, but I absolutely think we must do everything we can to help clean the environment.
That means from cleaner cars and batteries and electricity, all of that.
I absolutely support environmental movements.
I just don't believe in the tax.
But anyway, so for me, I love the environment.
I absolutely am not a litter bug.
I do my best.
I think it's so important.
Have you ever been hiking or to a lake or to someplace just really pretty a park, and discovered garbage or trash?
Have you ever been to a beach where maybe your children are running in the sand or digging in the sand and your child finds a cigarette butt or a broken piece of glass?
Come on.
Those people are so evil.
Yeah.
So if you see somebody who's littering, my recommendation, carry a gun and shoot.
No, that's probably not the best solution.
The best solution is just yourself, me.
Don't litter.
That's it.
And if you have a friend and he litters, say, hey, dude, come on.
Stop that.
Come on, man.
Seriously, stop it.
If it's a stranger, I don't know.
If you're a tough guy, say something.
If not, just keep it in your world, your friends, where you have influence.
Don't litter.
Don't be a litter bug.
Yeah.
Let's listen to the dialogue two more times.
Hey, litter bug.
Huh?
Oh, it's just a cigarette butt.
Use your pocket!
Sorry.
Hey, litterbug!
Huh?
Oh, it's just a cigarette butt.
Use your pocket!
Sorry.
Thanks so much for listening.
