Let's Master English L-M-E.
All right.
How much is it?
Is it $1,000?
No, no, no, no, no.
That's kind of like today's expression, EQ 326.
Let's go back in time.
Today's expression is great.
It is a grand.
A grand.
A grand.
G-R-A-N-D.
Ooh, that's a nice watch.
Is that a Rolex?
Yes, it's a Rolex.
How much was it?
It was a grand.
A grand.
A grand.
Every month for health insurance, I pay over half a grand.
Half a grand.
What is a grand?
A grand is a thousand.
Especially a thousand dollars.
It almost always refers to money.
A thousand dollars.
That's right.
A Rolex watch.
Have you heard of Rolex?
It's very expensive.
I don't know.
Can you buy a Rolex watch for a thousand dollars?
Are they more expensive?
Are they cheaper?
I don't know.
I have no idea.
I like my watch.
I have this Casio.
Such a great watch.
Yeah, it's a sports watch.
I got a lot of nice watches, but they're not really expensive.
None of them cost a grand.
What about you?
Do you have a watch or maybe a ring or a necklace that costs a grand?
Wow, that's pretty cool.
Yeah, my health insurance, I'm not joking.
Every month, my health insurance costs...
A grand, half a grand, actually.
Actually, it's between half a grand and a grand.
I pay $680 a month for health insurance and I'm healthy.
I was telling my dad my goodness dad, I spend so much money on insurance and I never go to the doctor.
I'm wasting money.
And my dad told me well, if you get into an accident, if something happens to you, you will be happy that you have insurance.
Yeah, I guess he's right.
But that's expensive.
What about you?
How much do you pay for health insurance?
Do you pay a grand?
Do you pay a grand for your entire family?
Do you pay half a grand for just yourself?
What is the cost of insurance for you?
Is it free?
I'm so jealous.
If it is.
Oh well.
A grand.
A thousand.
Especially a thousand dollars.
Check out the dialogue.
What's the rent on this place?
A grand.
That's pretty expensive.
Well, it's a really nice place.
$1,000 for an apartment.
Well, I guess in San Francisco, $1,000 for an apartment... would be nothing.
It would be one room, very tiny, probably a tough part of town, kind of loud, maybe some dangerous neighbors.
Yeah, $1,000 in San Francisco is nothing.
But $1,000 for rent in a small town in America is you might be able to find a very nice apartment.
It depends on where you live.
New York City, $1,000?
No way.
Get out of here.
Impossible.
You might be able to sleep in a parking space.
Yeah.
Where I live, it's actually a little bit expensive because everybody here is retired people.
They like it very quiet.
So my apartment is very small.
It's about a grand.
And I like it, though.
I like it.
All of my neighbors are retired.
I'm the young boy in the neighborhood.
They call me boy.
Hey, boy.
Hey, boy.
Yeah, they think I'm somebody's son.
They think I'm living here with my dad.
But no, mom and dad live in another place.
Oh, boy.
What about you?
Do you live in an apartment?
How much is your rent?
Is it a grand?
Do you have anything that costs a grand?
Me, my computers, yep.
I have a couple of computers.
They're over a grand.
My video camera, over a grand.
Anything else?
I don't think so.
Everything I have is pretty inexpensive.
Except my health insurance.
God, I hate that.
All right, a grand.
It's a great expression in America on the movies.
You hear it a lot.
You can say not just a grand, but if something costs, let's say $3,000, you can say three grand.
Or if you buy a really expensive car, maybe you spent 40 grand.
We do not say 40 grands.
No S, it's always 40 grand, 100 grand.
A grand, a thousand, thirty grand, thirty thousand, a hundred grand, a hundred thousand dollars.
Almost always dollars.
Check out the dialogue two more times and then a big announcement.
What's the rent on this place?
A grand.
That's pretty expensive.
Well, it's a really nice place.
What's the rent on this place?
A grand.

Thanks so much for listening.
