Easy English Expression, rehashed.
Hello everybody, my name is Coach Shane and welcome to Easy English Expressions.
Come on, let's master English.
Coach Shane here, E-Cube number 321.
This is a fantastic expression.
It's actually an idiom, and we use it all the time.
I do not use it to my wife.
My wife uses it to me.
I use it to my children.
And sometimes I use it in my live classes to people that I like, to people that I know.
Again, be careful with the expression, but it's really great.
If you know the movie Austin Powers, you might know this expression.
Enjoy.
Let's go back in time.
Today's expression is zip it.
Zip it.
Zip it.
You need to zip it.
Why don't you zip it?
Hey, zip it.
Z-I-P-I-T.
Zip it.
Zip it.
What does it mean to zip it?
It means to shut your mouth.
To be quiet, you need to shut your lips.
Stop talking nonsense.
Be quiet.
Zip it.
This is always a useful information when you're with your friends and relatives.
When they start talking too much about you, you can tell them, Zip it.
Is it a nice expression?
Well...
You're telling somebody to be quiet, so it's not that nice.
It is, however, much nicer than shut up.
Shut up?
That's pretty strong.
Zip it?
Much better.
Much, much better.
Why do we say zip it?
I'll tell you in a minute.
Check out the dialogue.
Huh.
I think your idea is terrible.
Be quiet.
It's all wrong.
Zip it.
You don't know.
Some people don't know when to stop talking.
Some people just keep talking and they have no feelings, no understanding, no empathy.
You got to tell them to zip it.
Yeah, if they start telling your secrets or if they start making you feel bad or feel sad or feel depressed, or if they start making you angry and you want to prevent a murder, you should tell your friends.
Zip it.
Be quiet.
Zip it.
Zip it.
Zip it.
Zip it.
Now, why do we say zip it?
Well, do you have a jacket or do you own some pants, some slacks, a suit, some blue jeans?
Well, on your pants, on your jacket, you might have a zipper.
Zip.
Here.
This is my jacket.
I have to stand up.
Here you go.
Listen carefully.
Yeah.
So I zipped open.
That's me sitting on my chair.
I zipped open my jacket.
So to zip up.
My jacket would be to close it.
And to zip it would be to zip your lips shut.
Zip.
So many times when we use this expression, there is body language.
You put your fingers together like you're grabbing a zipper.
And from the right to the left, zip across your lips.
Zip it.
Zip it.
Shut up.
Shut up is not nice.
Don't use that expression.
Use zip it.
There are more expressions too.
I'll teach you in the future.
Today, use zip it.
Oh, by the way, probably you don't want to use this expression to your boss, or to your professor, to your mom, maybe.
To my mom, yeah, definitely.
Sometimes my mom.
Oh, I love my mom, but she just talks too much.
Anyway, I hope she doesn't listen.
If she listens to this, I'm dead.
It's just a joke.
It's a joke, Mom.
I'll zip it.
Yeah, I better zip it.
Go ahead and check out the dialogue two more times.
Huh.
I think your idea is terrible.
Be quiet.
It's all wrong.
Zip it.
You don't know.
I think your idea is terrible.
Be quiet.
It's all wrong.
Zip it.
You don't know.
Quiet!
Thanks so much for listening.
