Easy english expression rehashed.
Hello everybody, my name is coach shane and welcome to easy english expressions.
Come on, let's master english.
Hey everybody, Coach Shane here.
How you doing?
How is your new year starting?
For me, it's going good.
Very, very busy.
We got our launch of a bunch of free stuff coming up in a couple days, so I'm super excited.
Today's expression, E-Cube number 318, is connected to a couple of days ago.
In EQ number 314, we studied to stoop so low as to... Well, today, we have a slight variation.
You can consider it part two.
I hope you enjoy it.
Let's go back in time.
It is, for me, 1-1-2-0-1-5.
January 1st, 2015.
It's the new year.
Happy New Year.
I hope that your year is starting off nicely.
Me?
So far, so good.
Work, work, work, work, work, work, work.
But that's what I want to do.
2015, the year of work.
That's good for me.
I want to do that.
Some people might say, oh no, Shane, you need some vacation.
Uh, yeah, well, sure.
But really, I do want to focus on work.
Yeah, I like it.
And that's what I'm doing.
Okay.
Today, we have a great expression.
Go with the flow.
What does it mean to go with the flow?
Well, first of all, pronunciation with the.
The th sounds together with the, with the, with the.
Go with the flow.
Go with the flow.
Do you go with the flow?
Sometimes i go with the flow, but i actually i think most of the time i don't go with the flow.
So what does it mean to go with the flow?
It means to follow everybody else, To do what everybody else does, to copy what other people do, to say what other people say, to think like other people think.
Go with the flow.
Is it good or bad?
Well.
To be honest, I think most people go with the flow and they're fine.
They're good people.
They have no problems.
I guess sometimes going with the flow might be the easy way.
So, whether it's fashion or your political ideas or the way you celebrate a holiday, if you follow the people around you, if you copy the people around you, If you do the same thing that the people around you do, it'll be easy for you.
Life will be easy.
You can go with the flow and be accepted.
But sometimes people go against the flow.
Yeah, you go down the street on a sunny day with an umbrella.
That's me.
Walking down the street on a super sunny day, you'll see me carrying an umbrella.
Where I live in the desert, everybody loves to get suntanned.
You know, I'm an older man, so for older men, many of us like the man tan.
But not me.
No, I'm afraid of the sun.
Get me out of the sun.
Oh, I know.
It has vitamin D, and I don't mind the sun, early in the morning or late at night or in the evening rather, but not the midday, not the midday sun.
That is scary for me.
I have skin cancer.
I'm not joking.
I need to stay away from the sun.
So when other people are enjoying the sun sunbathing swimming, running with their shirt off, just having a great time in the sun, I do not go with the flow.
I protect myself with an umbrella of long sleeve shirts, sun cream.
I do everything I can to protect myself.
Who knows?
Maybe in 10 years, if global warming is true and the sun is getting stronger and the earth is losing its ability to protect itself from the sun, maybe other people will start following me and maybe I will be the flow that everybody follows.
Let's check out the dialogue.
Why are you wearing a tie?
I always do.
It's Dressed Down Friday.
Go with the flow.
To be honest, I don't have any casual clothes.
Oh, we learned that.
Dressed Down Friday.
Remember?
So usually at a big company everybody has to wear a business suit and of course a a white shirt and a nice tie.
But on Dress Down Friday, you can wear casual clothes, a polo shirt, no ties.
How nice.
So that's the situation at this company.
But it is Friday and the guy's wearing a tie.
So what are you doing?
Why are you wearing a tie?
Go with the flow.
Be like everybody else.
And the guy confesses he does not have any ties.
Casual clothes can you imagine that?
Somebody with no casual clothes?
Well, believe it or not, i knew a man like that.
I'm serious.
He did have some casual shirts, but he had no casual pants.
I'm serious, he only had suits.
So when he would go out for dinner or go for a walk or even go to the gym to exercise I'm not joking he wore suit pants.
Yes, he did.
He had no casual clothes and he was rich.
He had lots of money, but he just never spent his money on clothes.
So he did not go with the flow.
I think that's good.
We read a book.
We have a book club.
And one of our books was Tuesdays with Maury.
It's a fantastic book.
If you haven't read it, I do recommend it.
Everybody loved it.
And one of the lessons in that book was create your own culture.
Don't follow somebody else's culture.
Create your own culture.
And that means...
Don't always go with the flow.
Sometimes it's nice.
Sometimes it's easy.
Sometimes you should.
But not always.
Sometimes you need to create your own flow.
When we say flow, the idea is the water moving down a river or a stream.
It's easy to follow that water.
But it's difficult to go against the flow.
But sometimes we should.
Let's check out the dialogue two more times.
Why are you wearing a tie?
I always do.
It's Dress Down Friday.
Go with the flow.
To be honest, I don't have any casual clothes.
Uh, why are you wearing a tie?
I always do.
It's Dressed Down Friday.
Go with the flow.
To be honest, I don't have any casual clothes.
Thanks so much for listening.
