How cool is that?
Yeah.
Check out today's eCubed expression.
Let's go back in time.
Today's expression is, I'm fixing to.
And I'm finna.
What?
Okay.
So the first one, I'm fixing. fixing to.
I am fixing, F-I-X-I-N-G, to, T-O.
I'm fixing to... I'm fixing to go to bed.
I'm fixing to make an expression.
I'm fixing to watch TV.
What does that mean?
That means I'm going to go to bed.
I'm going to Make an expression.
I'm going to watch TV.
I'm going to.
I'm gonna.
I will right now.
I'm getting ready to.
So if I say I'm fixing to make dinner, that means I'm getting ready to make dinner.
Probably within five minutes, I will be making dinner.
I'm fixing to go to bed.
I'm getting ready to go to bed.
That means within five or 10 minutes, I will probably be turning off the lights and going to sleep.
So I'm fixing to.
Now, if we say that really fast, it sounds like I'm fixing to.
I'm fixing to go to sleep.
I'm fixing to go to sleep.
I'm fixing to go to sleep.
And what's really interesting is Some people in America, they say it even faster.
And it sounds like, I'm Finna.
I'm Finna go to sleep.
I'm Finna go to sleep.
And that's what I wrote.
I'm Finna.
I am Finna.
F-I-N-N-A.
That pronunciation is the super fast.
Perhaps we could say the urban pronunciation in many cases of I'm fixing to
And it means I'm going to.
I'm getting ready to do something.
So, as an ESL student, if you are going to use this expression, I highly recommend that you say I'm fixing to.
Actually, this is such a colloquial expression.
I do recommend you say, I'm getting ready to.
I'm getting ready to study.
But if you have an American friend, you can try, I'm fixing to study English.
I'm fixing to go to bed.
And if you have a really close American friend, why don't you try, I'm finna study English.
I'm finna go to bed.
And see if they understand.
But they might not because the pronunciation is a little bit difficult.
Let's check out a dialogue.
I'm fixing to go to the store.
Great.
Get me some cheese.
You cooking?
I'm finna make some hamburgers.
Oh, good dialogue.
Good dialogue.
Did you understand?
The first guy said, I'm fixing to go to the store.
I'm fixing to go to the store.
And once again, fixing to, if we say it fast, many Americans will say fixing to, fixing to.
Why do we cancel the T?
What happens to two?
Well, I teach that in DDM.
You need to join DDM.
So anyway, I'm fixing to go to the store.
I'm getting ready to go to the store.
The other guy says, Get me some cheese.
Buy me some cheese.
Are you cooking?
And he says, I'm finna make some hammers.
I'm fixing to make some hamburgers.
Ooh, the guy is going to make hamburgers with cheese, therefore cheeseburgers.
So, what are you getting ready to do?
Are you getting ready to go to bed?
Are you getting ready to go to work?
Are you getting ready to go to lunch?
Are you getting to, what are you getting ready to do?
I'm fixing to.
I'm fixing to.
I'm fixing to now remember Each pronunciation goes a little bit faster.
So my example, I'm fixing to go to bed.
Repeat after me, okay?
I'm fixing to go to bed.
Too easy, right?
It's never too easy, but enjoy practicing.
Let's check out the dialogue two more times.
I'm fixing to go to the store.
Great.
Get me some cheese.
You cooking?
I'm finna make some hamburgers.
I'm fixing to go to the store.
Great.
Get me some cheese.
You cooking?
I'm finna make some hamburgers.
