Easy English expression rehashed.
Hello everybody, my name is Coach Shane and welcome to Easy English Expressions.
Come on, let's master English.
How are you today?
You know, yesterday we studied what's all the racket?
It's such a great expression.
But today, actually, I have a better expression.
Now, if you have two boys, little boys like me, This expression is necessary every single day.
I'm serious.
You need it every day.
Men, I really advise that you do not use today's expression with your wife.
Enjoy.
Let's go back in time.
Today's expression is to pipe down.
To pipe down, P-I-P-E, down, D-O-W-N, this is a phrasal verb, a pipe.
You can think of your kitchen pipes or the pipes in the bathroom.
Maybe even a smoking pipe.
Down, what does this mean?
This is a tough one.
To pipe down means to be quiet.
So why do we say pipe?
Well, we can also think of pipe as your throat.
The sound comes out of your throat and the throat is like a pipe.
So pipe down means turn the volume down on your pipe.
Be quiet.
Be quiet.
That's what it means.
And it's a great phrasal verb.
Let's check out the dialogue.
You'd better pipe down.
Why?
Dad just got home.
He's got a headache.
Oh, thanks for telling me.
Oh, yeah.
When I was young...
If my dad came home from work with a headache, everybody must be perfectly silent.
Everybody must pipe down.
No yelling loud.
And you know, for children that's tough because you know six-year-old boys, seven-year-old boys, 13-year-old boys, 17-year-old boys, 25-year-old boys, they have a difficult time piping down.
And the girls, too.
I remember my sister, so noisy, so loud.
Oh, my God.
Of course, I'm sure my sister thought that I was also very loud.
Pipe down, everybody.
Yeah, now that I am an old guy, not that old, but anyway, older guy, I do love silence.
Silence is golden.
Hey, everybody, please, please pipe down.
Let's check out the dialogue two more times.
Say it together.
You'd better pipe down.
Why?
Dad just got home.
He's got a headache.
Oh, thanks for telling me.
You'd better pipe down.
Why?
Dad just got home.
He's got a headache.
Oh, thanks for telling me.
Thanks so much for listening.
