Easy English Expression, rehashed!
Hello everybody, my name is Coach Shane and welcome to Easy English Expressions.
Come on, let's master English!
Hey everybody, Coach Shane here.
How are you doing?
If you're listening to this podcast live, it is September 2nd.
Yeah.
How is the weather where you are?
Where I am, it's very comfortable.
It could be colder.
I wish it were colder.
I love the fall.
What's your favorite season?
The season is not nearly enough long.
Oh, I need to stop.
Enjoy today's expression.
I already gave you the answer.
Let's go back in time.
Today's expression is not nearly enough.
I like this expression and it's not difficult to understand, but I never hear my students use it.
So, for example, would you like some cake?
Yes.
Here you go.
Oh, that's not enough.
I think you understand.
That is not enough.
That means you want more.
The piece of cake that I gave you was too small.
But what if you say, do you want some cake?
Yes.
Here you go.
Oh, that's not nearly enough.
That means that you want a lot more.
So the piece of cake that I gave you was way too small.
It was tiny.
You want a huge piece of cake.
Let's say you have a vacation and your vacation is three days.
Is that enough?
It's not enough.
If you said it's not enough, maybe you want four days or five days, maybe even six days.
But if you said oh, it's not nearly enough, then it means you probably want more than a week, maybe two weeks, maybe a month.
So not nearly enough is a great expression when you want a lot more of something.
Okay?
Let's check out a dialogue.
I love you, honey.
Really?
Then give me a foot rub.
Uh, gross.
I don't like feet.
You don't love me nearly enough.
Uh, shoulders?
No, my aching, stinking feet.
No!
Oh, yes.
Do you love your partner?
How much do you love your partner?
Would you give your partner a shoulder rub?
You know, the shoulders, sometimes they're sore.
If you love your wife or girlfriend or whatever, you will rub, RUB or massage their shoulders right.
What about their feet?
Especially if they have stinky feet or smelly feet.
Will you rub their feet?
Oh, maybe not.
Then in that case, you don't love your partner nearly enough.
That's the idea.
What a terrible situation.
What a terrible, terrible situation.
Not nearly enough.
I hope my lessons for you are beneficial.
I hope you're learning from the lessons.
And if you say, not nearly enough, oh no, what can I do?
I feel so sad.
Let's check out the dialogue two more times.
I love you, honey.
Really?
Then give me a foot rub.
Uh, gross.
I don't like feet.
You don't love me nearly enough.
Uh, shoulders?
No, my aching, stinking feet.
No!
I love you, honey.
Really?
Then give me a foot rub.
Uh, gross.
I don't like feet.
You don't love me nearly enough.
Uh, shoulders?
No, my aching, stinking feet.
No!
Thanks so much for listening.
