For sure, 206. It is to hunker down. It's a phrasal verb.
What does this mean? Let's check it out.
Back in time. Today's expression so important. to hunker down.
It's a phrasal verb to hunker down. H-U-N-K-E-R.
Hunker. Down D-O-W-N. Now, there are many usages of this phrasal verb to hunker down, But a very common meaning is to get serious. to really focus, to put all all your energy into whatever you're doing.
So a good example would be when you're driving.
Do many of you drive? Well, I do drive. God, I've been driving for a long time.
And let's be honest, if you have been driving for a long time And if you are driving on a road that you know, Do you concentrate that much?
Probably not. It's almost automatic. It's not very stressful.
However, if you're driving on that same road and the rain is coming down really hard. or the snow is just flying everywhere or if you see lots of children walking along the side of the street, suddenly you get serious.
You start to really focus. you use both hands on the steering wheel.
Your foot is ready to hit the brake. Your eyes are very alert. you turn down the radio, you stop talking to your friend, you concentrate.
You are Hunkering down. You're getting serious.
It's a great expression. And in our conversation, we have another excellent example.
What are you up to? I'm hunkering down for finals.
How many you got? Five. And a paper, too.
Boy, I feel sorry for that guy. So what are you up to?
What are you doing? I'm hunkering down for finals.
I am studying. I am preparing for for my final exams.
In America, we just say finals, finals, F-I-N-A-L-S.
That means my final exams. And this guy has five final exams and a paper to do.
He must be super busy. The end of the semester, the end of the quarter means lots of final exams.
What about you? Do you have any tests coming up?
Do you have a test next week? Are you going to hunker down for that test?
Are you going to prepare yourself so that you can do really well? on the exam so that you can survive the exam.
What about where you live? How is the weather?
Do you think you'll get a lot of snow Maybe you'll get a huge snowstorm and there'll be...
70 centimeters of snow and you won't be able to visit the supermarket for three days. you're going to have to hunker down in your house.
You're going to have to prepare yourself to survive in your house.
Until the snow melts. To hunker down. It's a real tough expression for tough people.
