Easy English Expression, rehashed.
Hello everybody, my name is Coach Shane and welcome to Easy English Expressions.
Come on, let's master English.
How's your Thursday going?
Coach Shane here. I love today's expression when you want to give your opinion.
You can use it, number 177, enjoy.
joy let's go back in time today's expression oh i like it it's my two cents let me give you my two cents what are your two cents i didn't ask for your two cents all right my two cents t -w -o -2 -1 -2 cents c -e -n -t -s like american money one penny is one cent two pennies two cents five pennies five cents c -e -n -t -s and s -e -n -s -e cents if we say it quickly they sound the same pain.
So I have five sense.
I also have five senses.
How many senses do you have?
Well, of course, if you're a human, we just have five.
The sense of smell, the sense of sight, the sense of taste, the sense of sound, and the sense of touch. Is that right?
Yeah, I think that's right.
But today we're not talking about those senses.
We're talking about the the cents, the money, my two cents.
My two cents means my opinion.
O -P -I -N -I -O -N. Why do we say my two cents means my opinion?
It's actually a modest expression.
So the the nuance is, let me give you my two cents.
Let me give you my opinion.
Now, my opinion is not that valuable.
It's just my opinion, but maybe you want to hear.
It's a very humble expression.
expression but if you say I don't want to hear your two cents it means I don't want to hear your opinion but actually it means I don't want to hear your useless stupid opinion so if it's my my two cents.
It's humble. But many times if it's your two cents, it means stupid.
So be careful with this expression.
Let's check out a dialogue.
Oh, I think this color agrees with me.
Can I offer my two cents?
Sure. I think the color is too girly.
Since when is pink a girlish color?
Since forever. Actually, that's not true.
In fact, back in the 19th century, pink was absolutely a boy's color.
At least in the UK.
Yeah. Children generally wore white clothing, but boys, specifically, did wear white.
Yeah. So, guys, if you are wearing a pink shirt, or like me, if you are wearing pink pants, well then you are very fashionable you are a traditional man you are a manly man wear those pink trousers and be proud myself I love my pink collection my hello kitty collection no that's not true I don't think I have anything pink but that doesn't mean I don't like it I think pink's fine.
Who cares what color you wear?
It doesn't mean you're more of a man, more of a woman, right?
Nah. Although I do like blue.
Yeah, blue is my favorite color.
So, once again, what is your two cents?
That's not always rude.
It doesn't always mean your stupid opinion.
If I ask for your two cents, that means I do want your opinion.
But be careful. Don't use this expression in a formal situation.
If you're in a business situation.
So tell me, Mr. Johnson, give me your two cents.
Not recommended because it's possible that the person might feel bad that you are thinking their opinion is not very valuable.
So just ask for their opinion, but use this expression with friends and family.
okay it is a great expression and if you're watching american tv or watching american movies i guarantee you'll hear this expression oh in books of course too let's check it out two more times oh i think this color agrees with me can i offer my two cents sure i think the color The color is too girl -y.
