Easy English Expression, rehashed.
Hello everybody, my name is Coach Shane and welcome to Easy English Expressions.
Come on, let's master English.
Thank God it's Friday.
TGIF, are you excited?
Do you have plans for the weekend?
Well, hopefully they include learning English.
Learn with me. Today's podcast number 148, here we go.
Let's go back in time.
Today's expression, oh, it's a good one.
It doesn't measure up.
It doesn't measure up.
It doesn't measure up.
So we have a phrasal verb to measure up.
M -E -A -S -U -R -E. Measure.
To measure up. Usually when we say measure, we think of checking the length of something.
So how tall are you?
Well, the last time I measured myself, I was 194 centimeters.
Centimeters. Not me.
No, I'm I think I'm 178 and not too tall, not too short, not too tall, just average.
But in this case, it doesn't measure up.
To measure up means to compare.
So it doesn't measure up means it doesn't compare, which means it's not as good.
So I'll give you an easy example.
Yesterday I made spaghetti at home.
The day before, my mother made spaghetti at her house.
So whose spaghetti is better, mother's or son's?
Well, to be honest, my spaghetti doesn't measure up.
In other words, my mother's spaghetti is so much better and my mother's spaghetti is natural.
Let's check out a dialogue.
So, how's the car? It doesn't measure up.
What? Your car is better than my Mercedes SLK 320?
What do you think? Mine's a Volvo.
Wow. Well, if you know about cars, which car do you think would be better?
A Mercedes SLK 320 or a Volvo?
That's a Volvo, V -O -L -V -O.
Yeah. Well, you know what?
If you're a young guy, I'm sure the Mercedes is much better.
Any other car doesn't measure up.
But if you're like me, an old guy, or if you're an older person with a family and safety is more important, then the Volvo is going to be better.
Or if you're a man and you're buying his son or a daughter a car, yeah, the Mercedes is beautiful but for my son i'm sorry boy i'm getting you an ugly slow but safe volvo the cars are totally different so this is an excellent expression when you want to compare something this drink and that drink this city and that city this english teacher and coach shane How does your English teacher measure up compared to Coach Shane?
I hope the answer is, he doesn't measure up.
She doesn't measure up.
Coach Shane is the best. Yay.
Yeah. Let's check out the dialogue two more times.
