Now today's expression, pay it forward. To pay it forward. P -A -Y pay it forward. F -O -R -W -A -R -D.
To pay it forward means to pay the cost for somebody else.
As a gift. As a surprise.
You do not even know who the somebody else is, but you're paying for it.
This is the idea of pay it forward. It sounds crazy I know.
But the perfect example would be, you're driving down the road and you come to a toll booth or a toll gate.
You have to pay some money, you have to pay a dollar or whatever.
So you go to the person and you give them your dollar and then you say to the toll gate person oh and here is another dollar for the person behind me.
Whoever that is I don't know.
And then you go and then the next person comes to the toll gate and says here's my dollar and the toll gate says oh no the person in front of you already paid you're free to go yeah it's like Christmas it's great and actually in America this happens a lot not just on the roads but in other places too let's check out the dialogue what would you like today a venti caramel macchiato please that comes to five dollars and fifteen cents okay here's ten dollars and thirty cents i'll pay for the next persons too oh paying it forward great next there you go paying it forward at the coffee shop Exactly,
now I go to the coffee shop probably four sometimes five times a week and nobody has ever paid it forward for me.
But hey I don't have to expect it, I can do it myself.
So maybe tomorrow I will pay it forward. You can do this in so many different places and so many different events whether it be newspaper, at a restaurant, even at the grocery market.
You can leave an extra $20 and say please use this $20 on the next person's bill.
Now of course there is the issue of trust. Can you trust the cashier to keep your money safe and to actually use that money to pay for the next person's bill?
Yes, there is that issue.
But in America, it actually is not common, but it happens.
It happens rather frequently.
It's something really nice.
Doing something for somebody that you don't know.
Something small. But it makes you feel good because you don't expect anything in return.
and it makes the person receiving the gift feel really good.
Isn't that great? Isn't that a nice way to make the world a little bit happier?
Pay it forward. It's a great expression.
Let's check out that dialogue two more times.
What would you like today?
Venti caramel macchiato, please.
That comes to $5 .15.
Okay, here's $10 .30.
I'll pay for the next person's too.
Oh, paying it forward. Great.
Next. What would you like today?
A venti caramel macchiato please.
That comes to $5 .15.
Okay, here's $10 .30.
I'll pay for the next person's too.
Oh paying it forward great next
