When you do not know something, you can use this expression.
Beats me, beats me, B -E -A -T -S -M -E, it beats me.
You don't have to say it, you can just say beats me.
Beats me. It means, I don't know.
Now, why does it mean I don't know?
Well, B -E -A -T. One meaning of beat is a drumbeat.
Do, do, do, do, do.
Another meaning of beat is in sports.
My team beat your team.
My team won. my team defeated your team and that's the nuance in this situation it beats me I don't know I'm defeated by that question I don't know the answer this is the nuance so you can think of sports and losing if somebody asks you a You feel like you lost because you don't know the answer.
