Hello everybody! My name is Coach Shane and welcome to Easy English Expressions!

Hey everybody! Happy Tuesday!
How are ya doing today?
Today we've got a very good expression, it's a reality for many of us trying to pay the bills, we got so many bills and prices are going up and then all these tariffs.
What's going on? Well hopefully this expression will be useful for you actually I hope you never need to use it but anyway it's good to know.
Let's go back in time.
Today's expression is very very important.
To make ends meet. To make ends meet.
M -A -K -E make E -N -D -S.
Ends. If we think about a pen or a pencil, it has two ends.
Let's look at a pencil, one end of the pencil you write with and the other end of the pencil you can erase what you write.
Okay, so ends A and B.
When say ends there are two ends to make ends meet m -e -e -t okay so for example the pencil can you make the writing part that end of the pencil meet the eraser end of the pencil no we can't because the pencil doesn't bend right so what does this expression mean to make ends meet.
Well the idea is to have your incoming money equal your out going money.
Do you understand? So the money that you're making and the money that you're spending and saving should be even.
You want them to be the same.
That making ends meet, you are able to survive, you're able to pay your bills, pay your rent, buy your food, take English classes, go to the movies, get some books, pay internet bills, pay your phone bill.
If you can do all that, you are making ends meet.
However, if your outgoing money is more than your incoming money, then you NOT making ends meet.
Now, I'll be honest. For me, I'm STILL NOT making ends meet.
I'm very close, but not yet.
But I know I'll get there.
I'll be fine. I'm confident.
I'm confident. Now, I would love to have my incoming money be greater than my outgoing money.
That would be great.
then I could say I'm more than making ends meet.
Let's check out a dialog.
Oh, I think I'll need a part -time job.
You already work! But I can make ends meet.
Why don't you try cutting out things like cable TV?
Yes, lots of people think that if they're not making ends meet, they try to cut out things like cable TV or maybe expensive coffee or buying a new television things like that they reduce their expenses they cut back on things they want to buy in order to make ends meet.
So how are you doing?
Are you making ends meet?
Is your family making ends meet?
Once again I hope that you are more than making ends meet.
I hope that you and your family are actually saving money, building a big bank account, but if you're not yet making ends meet don't give up.
Keep working hard. Maybe you might have to cut back a little bit.
Be careful and one day you'll be fine.
