Today's expression, a little bit of math, but super useful and really common, so enjoy the podcast and have a fantastic week.
Let's go back in time.
Today's expression is really useful.
If you are sure of something, for example, will it rain tomorrow?
You believe that absolutely, it will rain tomorrow.
Well in that case sometimes in English, we use a percentage.
So we could say 100 % it will rain tomorrow or we could say there's a 90 % chance that it will rain tomorrow.
So you understand 100%, 90%, 50%.
Now what is 100 %? Well another way in math to say 100, 100 % would be 10 out of 10.
So if you are shooting basketball and When you shoot 10 times and you make a basket every time you shoot, your shooting is 100%.
Or you could say 10 out of 10.
Now what if you were shooting 90 %?
Then you could say 9 out of 10.
I made 9 out of 10 baskets.
If you shot 50%, I made five out of 10 baskets.
So another expression for percentage would be number out of 10.
Five out of 10, nine out of 10, 10 out of 10, 10 out of 10 is 100%, it's absolute.
So let me give you an example of how we use, For example 9 out of 10.
Shane, would you like another beer?
No. No. No. One beer is enough for me.
If I drink two beers, 9 out of 10 mornings, I wake up sick.
Aha! So if I drink two beers, then there's a 90 % chance that I will wake up sick in the morning.
time but once again I say 9 out of 10 times or 9 out of 10 mornings I wake up sick.
Right now I live in the desert and this is July, July 2014 and actually July is the wet month in the desert.
Now no it does not rain every day, not at all, but it is the rainy season, however we would say nine out of ten days it will not rain during the rainy season.
And that's true. I think for the month of July, if we get three days of rain, that's really lucky.
What, wait, three days, there's 31 days in July, so that's like three over 31.
Let's just say three over 30, which is one over 10, which means a 10 % chance of rain.
So one out of 10 days it might rain.
But in America, we like to say nine out of ten.
Nine out of ten days it will not rain.
Does this expression make sense?
I hope so. It is actually pretty common. And we can say nine out of ten, we can say three out of four.
For example, three out of four dentists recommend flossing your teeth three times a day.
I don't know if that's true.
OK I've got a dialogue and I hope that you understand it 100%.
