Easy English Expression, Rehashed.
Hello everybody, my name is Coach Shane and welcome to Easy English Expressions.
Come on, let's master English.
DGIF, thank God it's Friday.
How you doing, Coach Shane here?
Oh boy, such a great expression that you can take into the weekend.
and I hope it doesn't apply to you.
Are you ready? Let's go back in time.
Today's expression is excellent.
You can use it today or maybe tomorrow or the next day.
Well, soon. It is on the edge.
To be on the edge. E -D -G -E.
So what does it mean to be on the edge?
Well, imagine you go up a high mountain, and at the top of the mountain, on one side, it's a nice hill that you climbed, but on the other side, it just goes down, like 500 meters straight down, and you are standing right there.
If you took one more step, you would fall 500 meters.
You are standing on the edge.
Okay? So that's what the edge means, on the edge.
So imagine, do you feel safe when you are on the edge?
No, it's very dangerous.
It's very risky. Here's a difficult word.
It's very precarious.
P -R -E -C -A -R -I -O -U -S.
So if somebody is on the edge, they're in a very dangerous or a very risky situation.
But it can also mean a very exciting or a very nervous situation.
So another situation, imagine you're watching the World Cup.
Now, I'm an American.
And today I was watching the World Cup game between the US and Germany.
And, oh man, if you watched the game, it really, Germany did a great job.
Their offense was really tough.
And I don't know. Our guys were swimming.
We did OK. It was a good game.
But right at the end of the game, America had two great chances to make a goal and they missed.
Now, as I was watching the game, do you think I was sitting back in my chair, relaxed?
go America, go America no, I was sitting on the very edge of my chair and my legs were bouncing and my hands were shaking and my eyes were open I was on the edge of my chair anticipating, hoping for some excitement something amazing so that's another definition of on the edge so this is a really good
situation. And in daily English, it has more usage, meaning something very exciting, you're waiting for something exciting, or you could become very angry about something.
And if somebody pushes you a little bit more, you go over the edge and you get really angry.
And that's what today's dialogue is about.
So listen to the dialogue, and I think you'll understand.
What's wrong with you, man?
I'm on the edge, man.
I'm going to lose it.
Why? What happened?
Everything. My job, my girl, my future.
I feel like I'm going to explode.
Oh boy, that guy sounds angry.
he's on the edge what was wrong why is he on the edge he said everything everything is pushing him to the edge my job so I guess he has a problem at work my girl I guess he has a problem with his girlfriend my future I guess he's worried about the future I feel like I'm gonna explode If he explodes,
he's going to be very angry.
He's on the edge. He's almost exploding.
He's almost over the mountain.
Do you understand? Yeah.
So this is a great expression.
And once again, it's June 26, 2014.
Tomorrow, it's Friday.
There's no World Cup soccer.
But it starts again on Saturday.
And I guarantee you, people around the world will be on the edge watching their teams win or lose in these next soccer matches.
It's going to be pretty exciting.
Yeah, once again, today America lost to Germany.
Yeah, I'm sure the Germans are saying, oh, danke, Shane.
Thank you, Shane. Yeah, you're welcome.
Well, America's saying thank you to Portugal.
Yeah. And I know the Portuguese people are frustrated.
I know the people in Ghana, very frustrated.
America got lucky today.
What will we do in the next game?
Oh, boy, I'm on the edge already.
I'm on the edge. What's going to happen?
Alright, let's listen to those dialogues, and then I'm going to say hi to the people who left comments.
What's wrong with you, man?
I'm on the edge, man.
I'm going to lose it.
Why? What happened?
Everything! My job, my girl, my future.
I feel like I'm going to explode!
What's wrong with you, man?
I'm on the edge, man.
I'm going to lose it.
Why? What happened?
Everything. My job, my girl, my future.
I feel like I'm gonna explode!
Thanks so much for listening.
