Easy English expression rehashed.
Hello, everybody, my name is Coach Shane.
And welcome to Easy English Expressions.
Come on, let's master English.
Coach Shane here. How is your Wednesday?
This is supposed to go out on Tuesday, but yesterday we had the presidential election and I was just watching like the election news.
All night, and I forgot.
So today you're going to get to this one's a little bit early.
I need to really do something special for this podcast.
Well, let's just go ahead and start.
Let's go back in time.
Today's Daily Easy English expression is a phrasal verb and it is to do something up.
To do something up.
Now, what does this mean to do something up?
For example, I'm going to do dinner up.
I'm going to do myself up.
If you say I'm going to do dinner up, that means you are going to make a very special dinner.
There's going to be a main course with a couple of vegetables and maybe a soup.
There might be an appetizer.
An appetizer is something small to eat before the main meal.
You're going to make a dessert and probably everything will be homemade.
It's going to be delicious and very special.
So do you do dinner up every day?
No, not usually. It's especially for a special occasion, like maybe somebody's birthday.
If you're going to do yourself up, that means you are going to make yourself look really good.
You're going to take a shower.
You're going to maybe get a haircut.
You're going to put on very nice clothes.
If you're a woman, you might put on some makeup and a dress and you're going to look your best.
So when do you do yourself up?
You do yourself up when you go on a date or perhaps if you go to a wedding or maybe even to a job interview, you should probably do yourself up.
Do you understand to do something up?
It means to make that something very special, very nice.
Let's check out the dialogue.
Are you going to do it up for your mom's birthday?
No, we're just going to have a nice dinner at home.
No party. She said she didn't want one.
Yes, mothers never want a special party.
Well, maybe some mothers do.
And actually I think all mothers would like a special party.
I'm not sure, but my mom always says, no, no, no, don't do anything.
Don't do anything. Just come to my house.
Yeah, but this year I promise I'm going to do dinner up for my mom.
We probably won't go anyplace, but I'm going to make my mom a very special dinner with a very special dessert.
I'm going to do it up.
I'm going to do it up for my mom's birthday.
Have a special meal, maybe some decorations and a nice present.
What about you? When is the last time you did something up?
Did you do it up for somebody's birthday?
Did you do yourself up for a date?
