Easy English expression rehashed.
Hello, everybody. My name is Coach Shane and welcome to Easy English Expressions.
Come on. Let's master English.
How you doing? Coach Shane here.
It's time for E cubed number six.
Easy English expression number six.
What is your job? No, don't say that.
Let's go back in time.
Today we have a very useful expression.
If you meet somebody, you know, for the first time, you're curious about what the person does, what their job is, but you shouldn't say, what is your job?
No, that's that's not too nice.
Use this expression.
What do you do for a living?
What do you do for a living?
What do you what do you do?
What do you do for a living?
So actually, what do you do?
This means the same thing.
Do you have a job? Are you a student?
What do you do? But when we add for a living, it actually means job.
So if you see a 17 year old boy, will you say, what do you do for a living?
No, you're not going to say that.
You have to guess that the person you're talking to has a job, then you use this expression.
So what do you do for a living?
What do you do for a living?
It's a very nice expression.
And when I meet somebody for the first time, I ask it so you can too.
Let's check out a dialogue.
What do you do for a living?
I'm a teacher. Oh, really?
What do you teach? I'm a math teacher at Harvard.
That does not sound like a Harvard math teacher.
Maybe it's not Harvard University.
Maybe it's Harvard Elementary School.
So anyway, the first question, what do you do for a living?
What is your job? What is your career?
How do you earn money?
I'm a teacher. I'm a teacher.
Now when a person says he or she is a teacher, it could be an elementary school teacher, a high school teacher, it could be at the university, it could be online too.
So any of those areas, what the person does is teach.
I'm a professor. Yes, of course, that's also possible.
I'm a lecturer. Very good.
In my case, I'm a coach.
But if I said to people I'm a coach, most people would think a football coach or a basketball coach.
So even in my case, I don't like to call myself a teacher.
But I would say, I'm a teacher.
What about you? What do you do for a living?
So the guy is surprised because I'm a teacher doesn't really sound like a teacher.
So he says, Oh, really?
What do you teach? What kind of teaching do you do history, math, English?
What do you teach? I'm a math teacher at Harvard.
Oh my goodness, a math teacher at Harvard.
So in this case, if I were asking the questions, I would say Harvard University.
Because I wouldn't believe the person.
I'm sorry, the voice and Harvard University just do not go together.
But what do I know?
I never went to Harvard.
Let's listen to the dialogue two more times.
What do you do for a living?
I'm a teacher. Oh, really?
What do you teach? I'm a math teacher at Harvard.
What do you do for a living?
I'm a teacher. Oh, really?
What do you teach? I'm a math teacher at Harvard.
