Welcome to Before Breakfast, a production of iHeartRadio.
Good morning.
This is Laura.
Welcome to the Before Breakfast podcast.
Today's tip is to make this be the year to do things you have said you have always wanted to do.
If you hear yourself saying you have always wanted to do something within reason, get it on the calendar.
There are many experiences that can be easily made a reality with a tiny bit of planning and thought.
As longtime listeners may know, I love miniatures.
On the shelves.
In my office I have set up several miniature rooms, like in a dollhouse, but without the house.
Anytime I am near a museum with a miniatures collection, I visit.
Yet somehow it took me years to get to the Philadelphia Miniatures Show, which is held literally less than 45 minutes from where I live.
I'm not sure exactly why.
I mean for several years.
I'd heard myself saying things like I'd love to go to the Miniatures Show someday, but it was never terribly convenient.
Well, it wasn't convenient this year either.
My flight home from Florida was delayed on the last day of the show, so I almost missed it.
But I decided to go for the last hour it was open.
And when I did, as you might imagine, I was just entranced.
So many little things.
I wish it hadn't taken me so long to go, but I am glad I made it.
I bet you can identify things you have said you've always wanted to do as well.
I've always wanted to learn.
Spanish is something I hear a lot, or it's my dream to go to New Orleans for Mardi Gras.
I'm dying to try that new restaurant.
Now, to be sure, there are some experiences that may not be doable in the near term.
If you want to write a book or travel to India.
That is going to take time and probably some longer-term planning.
But often people say they want to do things that are eminently doable.
They just haven't done them for no particular reason.
So decide that this year you will do those doable things that you have said you have always wanted to do.
One practical way to do this is to follow my time management rule of planning one big adventure and one little adventure every week.
People who follow this advice sometimes tell me that their little adventures were things that they had said they'd wanted to do for ages, but they had never actually done.
These are things like trying a new restaurant or coffee shop or going to a shop they frequently drive by but have never gone in.
If you find yourself talking wistfully about experiences you would love to have someday consider making a list of 10 things you have always wanted to do or have been meaning to do, and then actually doing them this year.
Maybe this list would include a mix of restaurants to try, shops and museums to go to nearby cities or towns to visit books, to read movies, to watch recipes, to try kits, to gathers to host skills to learn, and so forth.
It could be fun to decide to actually do one of these activities every week, or even just every month until you have knocked out the list.
By then you will have had a lot of fun and you hopefully, will have broken the habit of saying you want to do things but not actually doing them.
If you make this the year, you do what you've said you've always wanted to do.
I would love to hear about it.
