Welcome to The English We Speak with me, Neil.
…and me, Feifei. In this episode, we're going to look at an expression which is all about finding something that solves a problem – do the trick.
Do the trick. Can you give us an example to show how we use this?
Ok. I was looking for something to make my front room look nicer.
It's a bit boring at the moment.
But, look at this. I've found a really nice picture for the wall.
I want to brighten things up and I think this really does the trick.
Let me have a look at the picture… Oh yeah!
That looks amazing!
That will certainly do the trick.
Now, we might talk about a magician or a skateboarder doing tricks, but this is nothing like that, is it?
No, not at all. When we say something does the trick, it doesn't literally do a trick… it just solves a problem, like my boring -looking front room.
You know what? You should get a nice, bright rug.
I wanted to make my room look more interesting, I bought one and it really did the trick.
Now, if you want a better idea of how to use this expression, these examples should do the trick quite nicely...
Vinegar works well here.
But if you don't have any, some lemon juice should do the trick.
When people are angry with you, sometimes just a few kind words can do the trick and calm them down.
If you need the motor to work better a squirt of oil will usually do the trick.
You're listening to The English We Speak from BBC Learning English and we're learning the expression Do The Trick which is an informal way to say that something will solve a problem or give you the results that you want.
We often use it when we're explaining how to do something and we want to suggest the best way to achieve something.
An alternative expression that means the same is do the job.
Yes, if you're struggling to learn new words, then a bit of focused practice really does the job.
Hopefully, our explanation has done the trick and we'll see you in the next episode.
Bye! Bye! Yoga is more than just exercise.
It's the spiritual practice that millions swear by.
And in 2017, Miranda, a university tutor from London joins a yoga school that promises profound transformation.
It felt a really safe and welcoming space.
After the yoga classes I felt amazing.
But soon, that calm, welcoming atmosphere leads to something far darker, a journey that leads to allegations of grooming, trafficking and exploitation across international borders.
I don't have my passport, I don't have my phone, I don't have my bank cards, I have nothing.
The passport being taken, the being in a house and not feeling like they can leave.
World of Secrets is where untold stories are unveiled and hidden realities are exposed.
In this new series, we're confronting the dark side of the wellness industry, where the hope of a spiritual breakthrough gives way to disturbing accusations.
You just get sucked in so gradually and it's done so skillfully that you don't realise.
And it's like this, the secret that's there.
I wanted to believe that whatever they were doing, even if it seemed gross to me, was for some spiritual reason that I couldn't really understand.
Revealing the hidden secrets of a global yoga network.
I feel that I have no other choice.
The only thing I can do is to speak about this and to put my reputation and everything else on the line.
I want truth and justice.
And for other people to not be hurt, things to be different in the future.
To bring us into the light and almost alchemise some of that evil stuff that went on and take back the power.
