Hello, hello dear listener andwelcome.
Inter speaking part 2 describes something you own that you want toreplace.
You should say what itis, where itis, how you got it and explain why you want to replaceit.
Okay? The place means you want to change it into something else or into the sameobject.
Okay?Rory,hello.Hello.
Give us yourstory.Well, I really do loveit.
I think I'll have to get a new smartphonesoon.
I've had it for ages and it's a bit afraid of theedges.
It literallyactually, in addition tometaphorically, it's a Samsung S10 and it comes everywhere with me since I needed it for work and studying andentertainment.
I used it to make recordings and read articles and watch or listen tovideos.
I even have a few workout plans on there aswell.
So it coverseverything.
It was originally a gift from a former partner who worked forSamsung.
So I got it forfree, which is just as well since I think they were pretty expensive at the time it was given tome.
And that was Christmas2019.
So that's almost four and a half years agonow, maybe five yearsago.
I remember it vividly since it was just before the pandemic and without the new phone and my newlaptop, which I got at thetime, I would have been sunk during everything that followed because my old phone wasn't working so well and my old laptop was falling to piecestoo.
So it was almost perfectly timed for the switch over to onlinework, exclusively onlinework.
Sincethen, like Isaid, it's been everywhere with me and I've been able to do all kinds of things withit.
To behonest, maybe it's come to a few too many places because the screen is slightly cracked and I'm fairly certain the battery must be knackered at this point since it doesn't hold the charge very well compared to what it usedto.
Andreally, why should it adapt to so manyyears?
I think I could get another year out of it if I hadto, but I have a birthday coming up and what better time to ask for a new phone that will work out a little bitbetter.
I still feel a bit bad about itthough.
Even though it's just a hunk of plastic andmetal, that thing and I have been through a lot together and I will miss it when I get something bettereventually.
Hopefully the adjustment period will be easy after so long using the samething.
And will you get a new onesoon?
Well, my birthday is in two months so that seems quiteso.
Right,Dalysnap. So the task is something youown, something it should be an object that you want toreplace.
Anarray, replace means to have a new object or to have like a differentobject.
So kind of you talked about your phone so you'll get a new phone so you will replace an oldphone.
Yeah. What else can our learners talk abouthere?
I think most people replace theirphones, but other people could talk about other electronic objects which are regularly replaced likewatches, smart watchestoo, orcomputers, perhaps an appliance in thehouse.
Yeah, like akettle, afridge, aTV.
I want to replace an oldTV,right?
Something I don't know maybe an oldmattress, okay, and all the pieces offurniture.
Can I talk aboutclothes?
Like my winterjacket.Yes, if it's fallingapart, it's been a while sincewinter.
Yes,Dalysnap. So make yourchoice, but I think the easiest thing to talk about issmartphones.
Yeah. Alllaptops. Rory started itwith, while I really loveit.
Really do loveit, which is using do foremphasis.
Yeah, like I do love my oldphone, but I'll have to get a newone, okay?
I've had it forages. Presentperfect.
I have had it forages. It's a bit afraid at theedges.
What does it mean to be afraid at theedges?
Freight at the edges is usually used to refer to clothes which are fallingapart, and they've been worn so much that you can almost start to see throughthem.
But the idea of afraid at the edges means that something is not as good a condition as it used tobe, which my phone is certainly in thatcondition.
Could you use it about alaptop?
Could you give us asentence?
Yeah, sure. My laptop is a bit afraid at theedges.
It's usually aboutclothes, but it can be used to describe any kind of thing that's falling topieces.
Can I say my winter jacket is a bit afraid at theedges?
So I'll have to get a newone.
Yes. And Rory's phone is a Samsung S10A and Rory has had it for fouryears, dealing with an Anola a longtime.
Almost fivenow. Almost fiveyears.
Wow, and the phone is stillalive.
Well, halfdead. It comes everywhere withme.
Okay, so Rory does all hiswork, studying and entertainment using hisphone, dealing with hislaptop.
He also uses it to makerecordings, readarticles, wow, so all his life happens inside thisphone.
It was originally agift.
Yeah, that's how I gotit.
And I got it forfree. That's verynice.
It was pretty expensive at thetime, given tome, so it was given to me like five yearsago.
I remember itvividly, if you remember somethingvividly, you remember it very well incolors.
And this was before thepandemic.
Rory got a new phone and then he started workingonline.
Howconvenient,Rory. Welldone, you perfecttiming.
No, it was soconvenient.
Otherwise it would have been adisaster.
And we can say that without this newphone, I would have been sunk during thepandemic.
Sunk? In thiscontext, I would have haddifficulties.
Seriousdifficulties.
Serious.Like, we usually use it aboutships, theTitanic,Sank.
But you can also be sunk in terms of yourefforts.
Forexample.Well, if something doesn't workout, forexample, I triedto...
Yeah, well, if I hadn't had thecomputer, my efforts would have been sunk in terms of adapting to onlinelearning.
Since2019, this phone has been everywhere withme.
I've been able to do all kinds of things with thisphone.
Soagain,present,perfect, delisonapp.
I've been using it for over fiveyears.
I've been able to do all the work withthis.
So you can use the same expressions if you're talking about yourlaptop.
Even if you don't have to replaceit, talk about yourlaptop.
Okay, or yoursmartphone.
To behonest, it's come to two manyplaces.
So your phone has visited many places withyou, yes,Rory?
It has been through difficulttimes.
It's been through alot.
And the screen is slightlycracked.
Okay, so Rory dropped it a couple oftimes, right,Rory?
Yes, I dropped ittwice.
And both of thosetimes, it's cracked a littlebit.
The battery must benaked.
What does it mean to benaked?
It's justdone. It's finished or it's beendestroyed.
In thiscase, the battery is just aboutfinished.
It doesn't hold a charge as effectively as it usedto.
Yeah, if you saylike,oh, I was naked at the end of the workingday, I was verytired.
In formal BritishEnglish, buthere, the battery must benaked, so halfdead.
The battery doesn't hold acharge.
So you charge yourphone, but it just doesn't chargewell.
Yeah. I could get another onesoon.
And I have a birthday comingup.
And I'm going to ask my family to give me a newsmartphone.
Yeah.Yeah. And then it's socute.
Rory tells us that he feels bad about it because they've been together for a longtime.
Rory and hisphone. And kindof, youknow, they arefamily.
They arefamily.Yeah. They've been through difficulttimes.
It's just a hunk of plastic andmetal.
A hunk of is like a pieceof.
Yeah. Or a lump ofsomething.
Butit's,well, Rory has grown attached to this smartphone during this fiveyears.
Five happyyears. We've been through a lottogether.
Have been through a lottogether.
And I will missit.Oh, this is socute.
And then people we know that when you buy a newphone, it's this period ofadjustment.
Right? So you'll have to adjust to a newdevice.
So hopefully the adjustment periods will beeasy.
How Rory changes from an old phone to a newone.
And you're going to get aSamsung, right?
You're not going to get like Apple orsomething.
Norca. I don'tknow. I'm torn tothis.
I'm going to get a Samsung or I'm getting a fairphone.
I can't decide whichone.
Whichone? Fearphone? A fairphone.
Yeah. They're a little bit moreexpensive, but they're the materials to make it are ethicallysourced.
Okay. But you're going to ask your family to get youone, right?
From mybirthday,yes, I'm thinking aboutit.
Hmm.Nice. So they can all chip in and I get you a newone.
Well, yes. What helped you organize thisanswer?
Almost everything that was in thetask.
I did add a little bit of an introduction just to say I do love thisthing, but it's time for it togo.
And I think most people like their phone and they don't want to get rid ofit, but they reach the end of being able to use itsuccessfully.
This is theend. Youknow, speaking of theend, I also added something where I was talkingabout.
Hopefully the adjustment period will be easier after using the same thing for solong.
So this is about a possible side effect of replacingit, but it's all connected to the idea of replacing aproduct.
Lovethem. So, do you listen to talk about your smartphone or yourlaptop?
Okay?Oxant. Thank you very much for listening and we'll get back to you in our new episode about consumerhabits.
