Hi, it's Sophia Cartman, host of Dream Big Podcast Show, place to learn, laugh, and grow.
Hey Big Dreamers, did you miss me?
I know, I've been gone for a little while.
I took a short break to finish up summer and it honestly felt like the trip around the whole world.
And get ready for something big.
I started 5th grade.
Can you believe it?
Don't worry, I have a lot of stories coming up in the next episodes, including some major lessons I've already learned.
But right now, I want to kick off the season with something super cool.
Something that will remind you that age doesn't define your impact.
Big ideas don't need to wait for adulthood.
And world-changing actions often start with someone exactly like you.
Today I'm sharing stories of real kids who had an idea, followed their hearts and made a difference in the world.
They're not superheroes.
They're not billionaires.
They're just dreamers, just like you and me, who saw a problem and said, let's make a difference.
Are you ready to meet them?
Let's dive in.
This is episode 465 of the Dream Big Podcast, and it's time to dream big.
Welcome back, big dreamers.
First, I want to tell you about a girl named Gitanjali Rue, a scientist with a giant heart.
When she was just 10 years old, she saw news stories about water in Flint Michigan, being poisoned with lead.
Instead of thinking, that's really sad, and moved on, she thought this.
What can I do about this?
She researched, she tested, she failed, and she tried again.
And guess what?
At just 12 years old, she invented a device called Tethys.
It used carbon nanotubes to detect lead in water.
And by age 15, Time magazine named her the first ever kid of the year.
Raya once said, I don't look like a typical scientist.
But that's the point.
If I can do it, you can do it too.
Think about it.
She didn't wait until she was older.
She believed her ideas mattered now.
And so can you.
I invite you to read more stories of her and see what she's up to today.
Next, I want to tell you about Ella Daish, the beach cleaner who made waves of change.
She was just a regular kid who loved nature and hated seeing trash in it.
One day, she went to the beach and saw it was covered in a plastic waste.
And instead of saying, someone should clean this up, she thought, why not me?
And she started picking up trash one bag at a time.
She started a blog, then a petition.
Then she spoke to schools, to news channels, and even lawmakers.
Now her campaign has helped change companies think about plastic packaging.
And she's still going strong.
She didn't need a million dollars.
She didn't need to be a superhero.
She just needed to care enough to begin.
Big dreamers.
You might be thinking but Sophia, I don't have an invention or a beach or a huge idea.
That's okay.
You see, grown-ups are amazing, but sometimes they get stuck in what they think is possible.
Kids have fresh eyes.
You can see the world not just as it is, but as it could be.
You don't say, that's too hard.
You say, let's try it.
So, don't wait until you're older.
Your ideas are powerful now.
Your heart, your creativity, and your voice, they matter now.
Big Dreamers, here's your mission for this week.
Step 1.
Look around your school, neighborhood, or home.
What's one thing that could be better?
Step 2.
Dream up a solution.
It could be a drawing, a poster, a poem, or a plan.
Step three share your idea with your family, your teacher, your friend, or email my mom at olga at dreambigpodcastcom.
Or tag us on social media with your project.
Because change always starts small.
One kind word, one creative spark, one small steps.
Who knows?
Your idea could be a world-changing movement, just like in the stories that I just shared with you.
Big dreamers, always remember, you're not too small, you're not too young, and you're not too early.
You're the exact right person at the exact right time to start something big.
Big Dreamers.
