Hi, my name is Samantha Edu and welcome to Radio Headspace.
I am super excited to be here.
I'm a clinical leader, DEIB specialist, and I've been at Headspace for a few years now, working on building community and brave spaces.
I'll be here occasionally to talk about some things I think you might find helpful or interesting in the world of mindfulness and mental health.
So recently I've been feeling a little burned out, well maybe a lot burned out, so I decided to take a long weekend to get back to feeling like myself.
But the weekend came and went and to be honest I did not feel the restoration I was looking for.
It made me think about how Restoration is not something we should just look forward to on the weekend.
It's an ongoing process.
It needs the attention and intention, that you give to anything else in your life, like your friendships, your family and your work.
So today, I'd like to talk about how to make restoration a lifestyle.
And the key to that might be a little different than what you're expecting.
So I work in DEID, which is diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging.
It's basically a process of making workplaces safe enough for people to bring their authentic selves.
I love it, but it's also exhausting because it requires an extensive amount of empathy and compassion.
Sometimes I feel like I spend so much time trying to help other people that I forget to help myself.
That's why burnout is a huge problem for people in helping professions, which is exactly how I was feeling when I decided to take a trip to unwind.
So when I was taking the time off for vacation, I was on the plane and this family was coming to sit beside me and I can like feel their excitement as they were preparing to sit down and I was tired.
I was getting ready to put my ear buds and actually and go to sleep.
It was a dad and son and I think that this was the dad's first plane ride and the son's first plane ride and the son and excitedly was like, oh, my gosh, I think we're about to take off.
And the dad was like, yeah, I think it's about to happen.
And I didn't put my earbuds in.
I just was being nosy and decided to listen in on this conversation and sharing their joy.
And it really made me think about there was a time when I was a new plane rider, when I would get excited just going to the airport, because I knew I was going on a trip.
And I would relish in the plane taking off.
I would feel myself going through the clouds.
I would take time to think about like, do the clouds have weight?
Are birds up here too?
Like I would actually be thinking about these things and it would just make me feel much lighter.
And I couldn't remember the last time I was on a plane and was actually like allowing myself to enjoy the plane ride.
and it just made me think about, wow, get back to your joy.
Get back to your joy because if you get back to your joy that lives within you, that's where restoration lives.
Once I started realizing that joy had taken a back seat, I was so like, oh, heck no, like, absolutely not.
I'm not going to let it happen.
And if you're feeling this type of empathy drain or burnout, I would absolutely advise you to check in with yourself.
Like truly, truly, truly, check in with yourself because that's the only way you will know what you need.
And then be intentional about what you're doing for yourself.
If you're going to be taking a day off to, and you call it a restoration day or we call it a mind day, be intentional about the day.
If you're going to have coffee with a friend or have coffee with yourself, be intentional about what you're gonna do, what type of coffee you're gonna have and be very present during the moment, letting your nervous system know that it is safe in that space to just chill.
And the more you learn to do this, the more you get into a lifestyle of restoration.
A part of my restoration journey is deciding that I needed to teach myself, my nervous system to be okay with not overproducing a hundred percent of the time.
When I showed up at 50 % I checked in with myself because remember I have a regular check -in with myself.
And 50 % felt amazing it I felt like I had time to just relax.
I had time to produce great work that felt intentional.
I was still building brave spaces, still checking in with community.
But I also had another 50 percent to be intentional about feeling my own cup.
So you get to decide what percentage of production you want to be at to give to work, to give to home, to give to all of these other spaces.
But then also make sure that there is a percentage of that that you're giving back into yourself.
Okay, that's it for me today.
Thanks so much for listening and I'll see you back here really soon.
