Hello everybody, my name is Coach Shane and welcome to Easy English Expressions. you and me every day.
Come on, let's master English. Hello, everybody.
Thank you very much for downloading Daily Easy English.
Today's broadcast, today's podcast is brought to you by...
You. Thanks to you, you're making this podcast a reality.
Expression. Oh, it's a good one. It's a phrasal verb.
To sell someone out. To sell Shane out.
To sell Eric out. What does it mean to sell someone out?
Do you think it has a good meaning? Maybe a negative meaning. yes it has a negative meaning selling someone out is not good.
It means to betray the person. Oh, that's terrible.
B-E-T-R-A-Y. So that means it's basically... giving somebody up now to sell someone we tell about that person some secret.
And by telling that secret, you... the person selling out the other person you get the game so for example eric Cells Shane out.
That means Eric tells somebody. My secret.
Shane's secret. And in exchange for that secret...
Eric gets some, maybe some money. or maybe another secret or maybe a promotion at the company.
He gains something. He gets something. So that's why we say...
Because if you sell something, you receive money.
If you sell someone out, you might receive money. you might receive a better job.
You might get some extra secret information But the point is selling someone out is bad.
You are betraying that person. And that's never a good thing.
So let's check out a dialogue. I can't believe you sold me out to Mom.
You're always selling me out. Okay. Let's make a truce.
Okay, from now on, we lie for each other to mom.
I heard that! Okay, so that actually was a funny example.
Many times brothers and sisters will sell each other out. they'll go to their mom or their dad, and my sister's name is Christy.
And I will say to my mom, Mom, Christy ate the cookies. and my mom will be very happy that I was so honest and maybe my mom will let me watch TV.
But she will be very angry at my sister for eating the cookies.
Yeah. If you have a brother or a sister, don't sell them out.
Christy, if you're listening to this, I'm sorry. if I ever sold you out.
I'm sure you sold me out, too. Well, we don't sell each other out anymore.
Christy's secrets are safe with me. And hopefully my secrets are safe with Christy.
I don't think I have any secrets. I think my mom knows all my secrets.
Nobody can sell me out. So, have you ever been sold out?
Has one of your friends... maybe told your secret to someone else and they... gained something and you lost something, you lost your privacy or something worse.
I hope not. To sell someone out. It's a great expression.
Let's listen two more times. I can't believe you sold me out to Mom.
You're always selling me out. Okay. Let's make a truce.
Okay, from now on, we lie for each other to mom.
I heard that! I can't believe you sold me out to Mom.
