Hello, everybody. Welcome back to daily Easy English Expressions the podcast.
Thank you so much for listening to today's podcast.
It is Independence Day in the United States, the 4th of July.
America's birthday.
America is 242 years old, the United States.
And it's going to be great.
Lots of fireworks celebrations today.
Many people going outside, having picnics, having barbecues, going to the beaches, just having fun.
It is a full holiday in the United States.
Me? Maybe I'll pick some strawberries.
And that's about it.
When my son is older, I'll probably take him to the fireworks.
But yeah, no barbecue plans.
No, just a regular workday for me.
Oh, it's terrible. I don't mind.
You know what, though?
Sometimes these celebrations, if you eat too much and maybe drink too much, especially when you're older, wow, it really takes its toll.
And that's today's expression.
When something takes its toll, or in the past tense, took its toll, it means it really takes your energy.
It makes you very tired it exhausts you.
So the spelling t a K e take or takes or took T.
Okay, taken is possible to its I t s no apostrophe.
This its is a possessive its toll, T.
O. L. L. And the simple idea, the simple definition of toll is like a tax.
Okay. So if something takes its toll, it the expression means it takes your energy, it could be physical energy, it could be emotional energy, it could be mental energy.
So a test, like a really difficult English test, I guarantee will take its toll, it will take all of your energy and you will feel dead afterwards.
A 4th of July party, if you eat too much and drink too much, I guarantee on the 5th of July, you will feel very tired.
You will feel dead.
The 4th of July party took its toll.
And check out the dialogue.
Did you see Obama's before and after picture?
No, why? Eight years in Washington took its toll.
He looks terrible. It's true.
I think one of the toughest jobs in the world is being the leader of a country, not just the United States, I'm guessing any country.
It's a very high stress job and that stress is it's gonna take its toll.
It's gonna give you wrinkles, it's gonna change your hair to gray, it's gonna make you just look like a stressed out person.
Look at Bill Clinton, my goodness, he looks terrible.
But what about in your country?
Do presidents of your country after they're done, do they look different from when they started?
Now, of course, some of this is just age.
Age itself will take its toll.
But I guarantee age plus stress.
Bad combination. The older you get, I hope you are able to reduce your stress, reduce your parties, reduce the number of tests, because all of those things will take its toll.
