Hello, everybody. My name is Coach Shane, and welcome to Easy English Expressions.
Come on, let's master English.
Hello, everybody. Welcome back to Daily Easy English Expressions.
The podcast today's expression is really good, and it's more of a written expression.
And you can say it, of course, but if you read the news, there you're going to see it quite a bit.
The expression is to slip through the cracks.
To slip through the cracks, okay?
So I'll give you an example.
Your car has a windshield.
That's the glass in front, right?
Okay, so, you know, if you drive your car for years and years, sometimes a stone will fly up and hit the glass, right?
And it's really scary and it makes a crack.
C -R -A -C -K in the glass, but the crack is really tiny.
So, you don't worry about it.
it's okay. Well, believe it or not, it's possible for water to get through that crack.
And if water gets into that crack, it can actually make the crack bigger, especially if the water gets in and then the water freezes and then the water in the springtime thaws, then the crack in your windshield is going to get really big.
Okay, so anyway, do you understand crack?
Okay, so to slip through means to come through.
So when the water was coming through the crack, could you see it?
Of course not, we can't see it.
It looks like no water is coming in because the crack is so small, but actually water is coming in, and that water can create a huge problem.
Do you understand? So, if something slips through the cracks, it means something has happened or something has entered, and we should have seen it because it's not good.
It may be unhealthy.
It may be dangerous.
It may be terrible.
This is the idea. It's a tough expression.
But if you find the expression in Google News, I think you'll understand.
And check out the dialogue.
How did that guy get so many guns?
He slipped through the cracks.
But don't they check people before they can buy a gun?
Yes, but the system's not perfect.
You guys have probably heard of some of the tragedies, the horrible incidents where Americans are killed by some crazy guy and that crazy guy has not just one gun but many guns.
Yeah. Yeah, so how do these crazy people get the guns?
Well, they slip through the cracks.
They do. Now in my situation, I bought a gun a couple of months ago, a rifle, and before I could get the gun, they did a background check, a police check, everything.
They do check a lot of different places.
But sometimes, somehow, people slip through the cracks.
Maybe the guy typing the information typed the information wrong and the bad guy slipped through the cracks.
It happens. Yeah, it happens.
It's a great expression to slip SLIP through the cracks.
Go to Google, go to Google News.
See if you can find an example and you guys have a fantastic day and together let's Master English How did that guy get so many guns He slipped through the cracks, but don't they check people before they can buy a gun?
