Today's expression is, it's a phrase and it's really good.
Here it is.
A sad state of affairs.

I'll say it again.
A sad state of affairs.
A, the article A, sad, sad state, st-a-t-e of O-F, affairs.
With an S, a-f-f-a-i-r-s.
Something something is in, usually we say in, a sad state of affairs.
We don't need to say in, but usually we do.
My financial situation is in a sad state of affairs.
How would you describe your relationship with your wife?
A sad state of affairs.
That's not true.
My relationship with my wife is very good.
If something is a sad state of affairs or if something is in a sad state of affairs,
it's in a terrible situation.
A sad situation.
A very unfortunate situation.
I think right now in the United States politics, maybe in your country too, is a sad state
of affairs.
America's split right now in 2021.
Like 50% of the people are this way and 50% of the people are the other way and nobody
can agree on anything.
A sad state of affairs.
How is your English going?
Is going well?
Are you learning something every day?
Is your pronunciation improving all the time?
Or is your English a sad state of affairs?

Actually, it's a terrible dialogue because this expression is very sad, but it will show
you another great example.
Here we go.
Over 1,500 people have been shot in Chicago so far this year.
Yep, this year.
But guns are illegal in Chicago.
It's a sad state of affairs.
Yeah, it is.
It's terrible.
This is a 2021, right?
It's June.
What is it?
It's June 11th, June 11th, 2021.
In Chicago, so far 1,538 people have been shot with a gun in Chicago.
That's more than 2020.
The situation in many big cities is really a sad state of affairs.
Asian people are being attacked because they're Asian.
Asian people are being attacked because they're Jewish.
It's crazy.
It's a sad state of affairs in the big cities.
If I, and once again, I lived in Chicago, I would never go to Chicago at night and there
are neighborhoods in Chicago, I would never go to.
I'm not too far from New York and New York is a fun place, but I would only go around
New York in the daytime.
Yeah, it's a sad state of affairs.
It's serious.
These big cities, you know, the bad guys have the guns, gangsters, troublemakers, the bad
guys where I live in the country.
I'm not joking.
Everybody has guns.
Everyone.
And you know what?
There's no crime.
No crime.
Yeah.
Everybody knows that if you try to do something the other guy or woman could have a gun, but
where guns are illegal in the United States, it's a sad state of affairs.
The innocent people, the law abiding people can't protect themselves.
It's a sad state of affairs.
It is.
Now whether or not you like guns doesn't matter.
That's the fact, that's just the fact.
Yeah, it's a sad state of affairs.
It's very sad.
How about in your country?
How is it?
How is life in the city?
The big city.
Is it safe?
Can you walk around at night?
No problem.
When I lived in Korea, I had zero fears walking around the city at night.
There were some neighborhoods that might be a little bit, you know, got to watch yourself.
But basically never a problem.
Nobody has guns.
Actually, I had a neighbor who had a rifle, but very, very few people have guns in Korea.
And that makes it nice, right?
But there's still problems.
But in America, you know, it's a different situation regarding guns.
Dangerous.
In the country where I live at night, no problem.
Go anywhere.
Feel free.
So where I live, it's not a sad state of affairs, but in the big cities, Chicago, New York,
LA, San Francisco.
Have you heard about San Francisco?
It's so dirty.
Smelly.
Portland, Oregon.
It's terrible.
It's a sad state of affairs.
What's going on?
We need people to have, you know, good values, family first, right?
Family.
That's what's important.
You're a mom, your dad, your brothers, your sisters, your children, your uncles, your
aunts, your cousins.
I know.
I'm saying maybe I'm too old.
So that's why I believe that.
But I think if you're really focused on family, if you have a religion, you know, whether
you're Catholic or Lutheran, Hindu, Buddhist, Muslim, you know, if you have a Jewish, if
you have a religion and you, you know, kind of follow your religion, that actually helps
a lot of people, not everybody, but it helps a lot of people.
I think it's the fear of God, the desire to go to heaven, the love of what the religion
preaches.
I think that's a good thing too.
I'm not telling you to be religious.
Don't worry.
I'm not saying that.
But I'm saying for a lot of people, that helps.
That helps.
And in America, religion is dying for most people, especially in the city.
I'm not sure if that's a good thing, but I don't think it'll ever change, right?
Who knows?
I don't know what the trend of the future is, but I do know that right now we are in a
sad state of affairs and it needs to improve.
I have no idea how.
I have no idea how all I can do is take care of myself and my family.
And my environment, that's all I can do.
Right?
What else can you do?
Become a politician?
Oh my God, no thank you.
No, no, no, no.
If you want to be a politician, that's great.
Please try to make your city, your state, your province, your country.
Please try to make the world not a sad state of affairs, right?
With COVID-19, last year it was a sad state of affairs.
Now things are getting better in many places in the United States.
Things are getting better regarding COVID-19.
Oh boy, a sad state of affairs.
This is a very useful expression.
Unfortunately, maybe throughout history, it's always been a sad state of affairs.
I don't know.
Right?
Maybe.
Who knows?
Hopefully, things will get better and hopefully things will get better fast.
