two degrees Celsius outside snowing 27 degrees Fahrenheit north of Chicago is where I am yeah beautiful lots of snow already I usually when we get snow this early and this is early to have snow right outside we have about 10 centimeters that's staying usually this snow melts before you know the the big snows but I'm surprised this snow is staying and I'm very happy I absolutely love it except I have to shovel snow every day yeah but that's okay yeah I was outside this morning shoveling snow and I liked it but it does make the roads dangerous.
Yep, the beginning of the season is always dangerous.
So, where you are, just drive safely.
Drive safely all the time.
And remember, it's not you usually that causes the accident, it's somebody else.
So, be careful. Okay, today's expression is very, very, very, very good.
It is at your beck and call.
At your beck and call.
Say it. At your beck and call.
At your beck and call.
B -b -d -d -da. B -b -d -d -da.
At your beck and call, what?
At your ATYOU are two words, at your beck and call, B -E -C -K B -E -C -K and A -N -D call, C -A -L -L.
at your, at someone's, back and call.
So when we say it quickly, at your, typically sounds like at your, at your, at your, back and call.
When we say it quickly, back and call, back and call.
So at your back and call, at your back and call, call.
At your beck and call.
What does this expression mean?
Well I'll explain it, after you guys listen to the dialogue.
Listen carefully. Ohhh, can you bring me an ice cube.
Huh, I'm not at your beck and call.
Oh, I know but you were just - Go get it yourself.
Yeah, so some people think it's Beckin the word B -E -C -K -O -N, but actually B -E -C -K is correct.
To be at someone's Beck -end call.
So to be at someone's call means when I call you, when I call your name, you have to listen to me, you have to do what I say.
To be at someone's Beck B E C K now.
This is an old verb and what it means is, when you use your finger to call somebody, or when you use your eyes or your head, some sort of body language.
To call somebody. This is the idea of to Beck.
So if you're at a very expensive restaurant where it's very quiet.
Do you call the waiter or do you Beck the waiter?
Yes that's right. We Beck.
Now actually in daily English we wouldn't say Beck.
We would say Becken B E C K O N.
That's kind of the modern version of Bec.
But Bec and B -E -C -K -O -N comes from the verb Bec, B -E -C -K, it's just a really really old verb, and don't ask me, you can go online and double check.
Anyway, the expression question, to be at your beck and call means to be your servant.
To be your slave. Yeah that's the idea.
So I think in the dialogue, it was the husband.
Can you bring me an ice cube?
And the wife was angry.
I'm not at your beck and call.
I know but you were just, I don't know, maybe the wife was in the kitchen or by the freezer and he says but you were just you know next to the freezer and the wife says go get it yourself go get the ice cube yourself yeah so what about you at your house are you at anyone's beck and call are you at your mom's beck and call or is your mom at your beck and call what about dad or grandpa is he at anyone's beck and call or is grandma or are you at his Beck and call what about at the office are you at the bosses Beck and call oh god I used to be I hated it yeah I used to be I used to work for an English
