Hello everybody. My name is Coach Shane and welcome to Easy English Expressions.
You and me everyday.
Come on, let's master English.
Hello everybody, welcome back to Daily Easy English Expression, the podcast. Today's podcast is very useful if you like shopping.
If you like to buy things, you might want to know the asking price.
What is the asking price?
Asking price, A -S -K -I -N -G asking price, P -R -I -C -E.
Of course, when you go shopping, you need to know the price, correct?
If you want to buy a book, you can see that the price is $10.
If you want to buy a hamburger, you look at the menu and the price is $1.
Now, if you go to the bookstore and you see the price of the book is $10, do you have to pay $10?
Can you say to the store owner, hey, I'll give you $9 for this book, is that okay?
Is that possible? Of course not.
When you go to McDonald's and you order a hamburger and they say that'll be $1, can you say, well, McDonald's isn't too healthy so I'm going to give you 70 cents." What will they say?
They will say, Goodbye sir, next.
Of course not. No, they're not asking for that much money.
They're telling you how much the price is.
So, at a regular store, the price you see on the product is the actual price.
They're telling you how much they want.
They will not negotiate but some places The price that you see on the product is the asking price They're asking you to pay ten dollars They're suggesting that you pay ten dollars, but if you don't think It's worth ten dollars.
You might want to try and negotiate Wait so what kind of stores are these?
Well usually therefore used items. Sometimes for art, sometimes for last year's clothes or old clothes out of fashion.
Even at car dealers when they have a price of the car, $22 ,000 you might be able to negotiate a cheaper price.
In this situation asking price is what's important.
What's the asking price?
What price are they asking for?
What is the price they are hoping to charge?
Does that make sense?
Let's check out a dialogue.
Oh! Look at this sweater.
Nice! Is it wool? 100 %!
It's beautiful! What are they asking?
Only $300! Yikes! Several months ago, actually not that long, maybe two months ago, I went to the Grand Canyon in Arizona, beautiful area, lovely area, and there were a couple of stores that sold Indian crafts.
So the local Indians, they would make things.
And some of the things that they were selling were sweaters.
Among the things they were selling were these sweaters.
And they were beautiful sweaters.
They were 100 % wool.
They're homemade and the price they were asking was $300.
Oh, I couldn't believe it.
My goodness! I don't have anything that's $300.
dollars my video camera is $300 nothing else though my gosh for a sweater I couldn't believe it but then again it's really good quality its handmade yeah to be honest if I had 300 dollars I would have given it to them but once again this is homemade stuff they made it by hand so probably you could negotiate so you could say so what are you asking for this sweater that's what we say how much is this sweater that's okay but we can also say what are you asking what's the asking price what are you asking for this sweater $300 hmm I'll give you two hundred and fifty dollars and then you might be able to
negotiate. You might say something like, well, if I buy two sweaters, will you give me a discount?
This is the idea of negotiating.
Asking price. What are they asking?
What's the asking price?
Very, very useful expression.
Now, many of you know that I have online classes.
And we've got DDM, we've got perf.
What do you think? Do you think the prices on those classes are prices?
Are they the final price you must pay or are they asking prices?
What do you think? Yeah, I'll leave you guys up to decide that.
That's it for today.
Have a fantastic day.
Practice, practice, practice, the dialogue two more times, practice with a friend.
And come back tomorrow and check out the next podcast. And together, let's master English.
