Come on. Let's master English.
Hello everybody, welcome back to daily Easy English expression.
Thank you very much for listening to the podcast. Today is a very important lesson.
You know it's what, 2015?
September already, my goodness.
And the world, thanks to the internet and satellite communications, the world is a very small place.
And when we meet people from around the world, we have to remember that sometimes people are very sensitive about who they are, where they're from, what language they speak, what country they're from, and we need to pay attention.
We cannot assume that everybody is the same in each country, even in a country like America.
People who are from New York are often very different from people in California and people in Texas and people in Minnesota.
People are all different and they have pride in their backgrounds, in their culture, and I think it's a good thing.
So today's expression we're gonna focus on three words and in America these three words are considered the same thing, but actually, they're very different.
Dutch, Holland, and Netherlands.
Dutch, Dutch, Dutch, Dutch, Dutch, Dutch, Dutch, Dutch, Dutch, Dutch, Dutch, Dutch, Dutch, Dutch, Dutch, Dutch, Dutch, Dutch, Dutch, Dutch, Dutch, Dutch, Dutch, Dutch, We know of the country, I think the modern name is the Netherlands, many of us call it Holland.
The people from Holland or the Netherlands, we call them Dutch, the language they speak is Dutch. But actually, it's not that simple.
It is a little bit more complicated.
And I have a dialogue that will hopefully explain it to you.
Dutch, Holland, Netherlands, Netherlands, are they the same?
Listen carefully. Where are you from?
The Netherlands. Oh, Holland, right?
Well, Holland is actually just an area of the Netherlands.
Oh. But you're Dutch, right?
No, I'm Frisian, a different ethnic group.
Oh boy, yeah, so this is complicated so the Netherlands is the name of the country the borders that we see on the map.
Holland is actually just an area within the Netherlands and Dutch actually refers to a particular ethnic group.
Another ethnic group in the Netherlands would be the Frisians.
Oh boy this is complicated I know I know it's complicated, but let me give you another very good example that you might be more familiar with and once again if there's somebody from the Netherlands out there and if I made a mistake please leave a message.
I'm I want to learn and do you care?
I know that some people do care.
But anyway, my example, let's go to the UK, the United Kingdom.
Ah yes, and I think we are aware that the northern part of the main island is Scotland.
The big part of the island is England and the western lower part is whales.
Those are three different areas and those people who live in those areas, they consider themselves quite different from each other.
In fact they consider Scotland and Wales and England three different countries and even the language especially we can say the accent is quite different but the words that they use are very different ah yes so there's a good example and and I'm sure I wouldn't be surprised in your country it's probably very different too and that's what I would love to know tell us about your country you might maybe it's Germany or Italy or Spain maybe it's Korea or Japan or Vietnam or China something like that tell us is everybody the same because you know when we say China you know everybody's Chinese but I
think we know China is a very big country and people in northern China might be different than people in southern China the Mongols out in the western part of China are probably quite different than the Chinese people near Vietnam oh I bet there's lots of differences lots of cultural ethnic language differences different parts of the land these are things that as the world becomes closer as the world becomes a smaller place these are things we should start to learn and respect it's a great thing I think diversity is It's beautiful.
Let's learn about each other and learn about the different cultures, the different languages, the different traditions and just respect each other.
It's amazing. I love it.
The internet is so cool to me because I can meet you, I can learn about you, I can learn so much. And I really like it.
And yeah, so that's today's expression.
Today's expression basically is Dutch, Holland and the Netherlands.
There are 3 different things.
The Netherlands is the country that we see on the map.
Holland is actually an area within the Netherlands.
And Dutch or The Dutch are actually an ethnic group.
It's also, we call it the language, but it's actually an ethnic group within the Netherlands.
So there's a lot, a lot that we need to learn.
And I'm excited about learning.
Alright, let's check out that dialogue two more times.
And together, let's master English!
Where are you from?
The Netherlands. Oh, Holland, right?
Well, Holland is actually just an area of the Netherlands.
Oh, but you're Dutch, right?
No, I'm Frisian, a different ethnic group.
