My name is Jack and I'm here with my co -host Sochal and today we are doing a Culture Corner episode and today's question Sochal is what kind of music do Americans like the most?
Jack that's an interesting question because it's such a huge country and I would say that it varies a lot by region i think in the kind of south or rural areas we think of country music as being quite popular um you might think in big city areas especially areas with a larger african american or black
population you see a lot of influence from their culture in the music like hip hip -hop rap um and in areas with high latino population you see a lot of spanish music like a lot of um music in spanish including like rancheras and reggaeton and like kind of bilingual music like you'll hear them speak
in english and spanish and have like artists from the u .s or canada featured on a track or vice versa like latin american artists featured on an english track um yeah and then i guess the big one is pop pop literally stands for popular music um and those are artists like beyonce rihanna taylor swift
uh selena gomez um you know nikki minaj doja cat all those people are kind of in the pop lexicon there's men there too Justin Bieber is like one of the big ones that is world famous um I would say for men in pop besides Justin Bieber most of the men that are that are popular in music are African -American artists
would you agree with that yeah except for maybe Justin Timberlake I would put him in there yeah it's true I would yeah Justin Bieber the two Justins yeah Justin bieber justin timberlake but other than that yeah i would totally agree with you and say um you know can you can you give me a couple examples
i'm trying to think of of some off the top of my head um outdated now but probably usher was a big one taiga was a big one um king sean was a big one uh famously way back when biggie and tupac were huge yeah this was before my time like before i was born i guess but that was actually my era of uh yeah
yeah that was the a great era actually it's good yeah and i think in your era jack am i mistaken to say rock was also extremely popular and grunge kind of grunge right yeah the thing is rock and roll is dead now no one listens to it anymore you know i mean i mean people obviously some people do but um
just kidding Yeah, well, boomers and Gen Xers like me, old guys like me still love that stuff.
But the truth is, is that pop music rules the world and it's true in America.
So the biggest acts right now, I would say Taylor Swift.
She's probably the biggest act on the planet.
I know. I'm not a fan.
Are you a fan of Taylor Swift?
I really think her music is basic.
you know i'm not yeah i mean i um there's a couple of songs that i think are are kind of catchy you know some yeah i'll agree with that exile for example with bonn ivor no that's not bonn ivor who was it someone she did exile with whoever she did exile with that's a really great song okay um yeah see
i don't even know the names of the songs that i like to be honest i'm just i've heard a few of her songs and i'm like yeah that's i get i get it but it's not for me you know it's very bubblegum pop uh the one i'm talking about exile is not it's more like a country folksy right she started as a country singer
first and then she kind of morphed into a pop star um but then like i would say the other huge acts out what is dax are you tracking all our cars on carvana value tracker on all our devices yes kristen yes i am well i've been looking for my phone for in dax's domain we see all.

From Wisconsin with love, welcome to delicious.
There would be like Jason Aldean, like a country singer, you know.
Or Morgan something Rather there's a guy who's huge That's also a country singer But then the other people I would say Are really famous African American artists again like Beyonce Yes, right You know who's really big right now Bad Bunny who's a Latino artist actually Is huge even though his music Is
in Spanish He's super popular here in the US Actually as well And then the K -pop you know BTS Is huge in America and black pink so um people just love the kind of poppy electronic you know kind of uh rap people like stuff with a beat they can dance to and they like kind of commercial bubblegum pop which is what we
call just like easily digestible music with not really super deep lyrics and not really complex beats or anything it's just a very easy to listen to and widely liked that's probably what's yeah and we forgot post malone he's huge right now yeah he is huge as well he's ariana grande yeah i mean a lot
of a lot of them use uh something called autotune which is like uh it's a function where you know you can it it corrects your voice to to keep it in tune um so it's a lot of computerized digital stuff that's being made right now um to me it's too clean it sounds too perfect like i what i like about old
rock and and grunge and stuff like that is that sometimes it's not in tune perfectly and that those what you might call quote -unquote mistakes are what give the song personality and and and the messiness of the guitar and the in the the pauses or the mistakes or the out of the the the off rhythm is what gives
it its texture its personality it's a much deeper i think kind of music and but again you know i'm in the minority like people seem to like this new bubble gum pop pop clean digital pure stuff and to me it's it all sounds very much the same and it's very manufactured um I can agree with that yeah yeah
so what do you guys like in your country I know that it varies a lot from country to country I would say Korea Jack would you say Korea is similar I think a lot of bubblegum pop is really pop oh yeah yeah yeah for sure it's even worse i think than the u .s like a lot of it sounds exactly very similar
like there's a trend and everything kind of follows that trend yeah i think i think asia is notorious for that kind of stuff you know to be honest you know for liking that yeah and mexico i personally think it has a lot more diversity and a lot more interesting voices like shakira and natalia for example
are still two of the top female artists in the game and they have more of a raw quality to their voice and music um but yeah let us know what's popular in your country who is your favorite artist what is your favorite song make sure to leave us a comment down below at a to z english podcast .com shoot us
