Could summer shading pose a threat to your relationship?
thanks for asking summer is here the sun's out you've got a week or two off work and the beach and sea are calling it's time to relax soak up some much -needed vitamin D and why not open the door to new romantic encounters that's all well and good if you're single but if you're in a relationship bear in mind that summer shading is becoming more and more common well the term was coined relatively recently by dating app Wingman.
But of course that doesn't mean that the behavior it refers to didn't already exist. It basically means putting a romantic relationship on hold over the summer in order to enjoy a few carefree flings.
Then come autumn, picking things back up with one's original partner just in time to avoid spending winter alone.
In practice a summer shader might break up with their partner around June, or suggest taking a break.
They then go on to have one or more summer romances, only to return to their former partner in September as if nothing ever happened.
In short, they keep their main relationship on ice while they enjoy themselves over the summer.
How common is summer shading then?
Well, a survey from Wingman in 2023 found that 67 % of its users admitted to doing it.
Talking to HuffPost .com about summer shading, Wingman founder Tina Wilson said, During summertime when there's more focus on friends, travel and good weather, people tend to be less open to finding committed partnerships and the dating scene can become that more confusing to navigate.
That sounds like it could be quite the convenient arrangement.
Well, the problem is summer shaders often aren't transparent about their relationship status, status, meaning it can lead to people getting hurt in multiple ways.
Put yourself in the position of the partner who's ditched at the start of the summer and then contacted again in the autumn.
That can be emotionally confusing to say the least. And then what about the summer flings who may never realise the person they've been seeing isn't actually fully available.
Talking to Metro .co .uk in 2023, relationship expert Emma Hathorn said many people will be dating over the summer months with genuine intentions, so when they end up experiencing summer shading, it can end up feeling like a waste of time and energy invested into a dead -end prospect.
How can you tell if you're being summer shaded then?
Some red flags include your partner starting to pull away at the end of spring, especially if they talk about their summer plans without ever including you.
Likewise, if they break things off and then reappear in September, it's pretty easy to connect the dots.
Clarity is key really, and as is often the case, the answer lies in communication.
If things feel strained just before summer, it's worth addressing the issue directly.
There's nothing wrong with taking a break over the summer per se.
But that's only if both parties agree to it, and have had an honest conversation about what that really means.
