Could mate poaching be a threat to your relationship?
Thanks for asking.
All romantic relationships come with challenges, and one of the biggest hurdles tends to be faithfulness.
Over the years there have been a number of studies on the prevalence of cheating, but it's tricky to know how reliable that data is.
After all, it relies on people owning up to their unfaithful behavior.
Generally speaking though, surveys from the likes of YouGov have suggested that around one in five people in the UK have had an affair at some point in their life.
And, of course, a lot of the time.
Those people's lovers also know full well that they're getting involved with someone who is already taken.
That means they're engaging in what's known as mate poaching.
Behaviour described by Psychology Today as the deliberate attempt to attract, seduce or entice individuals who are already in a committed romantic relationship.
Perhaps.
Unfortunately, it's a relatively successful approach too, as the same Psychology Today article references studies suggesting somewhere between 10 and 20 of heterosexual relationships begin through mate poaching for someone who's actually available.
Sometimes they might be blinded by romantic feelings for the partner they're trying to win over.
But there are those who actually enjoy the thrill of seducing someone who's already in another relationship.
There may be a deliberate strategy involved, which is quite different from simply developing feelings for the wrong person.
According to Psychology Today, serial mate poachers exploit perceived vulnerabilities or dissatisfaction within the target's relationship to increase their chances of success.
Their behavior can manifest in various forms, including flirtation, emotional manipulation or direct advances aimed at undermining the existing relationship.
There may be certain psychological traits that can help identify someone trying to come between you and your partner.
Studies on mate poaching have highlighted three common personality traits.
Narcissistic tendencies, or at least lower than average empathy.
Being unfaithful themselves.
And sociosexuality, which is a preference for short-term, non-committal relationships.
Now let's sign off with a word of warning for anyone who's considering leaving their partner for what they see as a better alternative.
A review published in the Journal of Research in Personality in 2014 found that individuals who were punched by their current romantic partners were less committed, less satisfied and less invested in their relationships.
