Good job enrichment make your work more rewarding?
Thanks for asking. A lot has changed in the workplace since the onset of the Covid -19 pandemic in 2020.
Companies have had to figure out how to best manage remote work for their employees all the while supporting their career development and helping them feel more satisfied at work?
Well, the concept we're going to talk about today may be just what's needed to address those challenges.
It's a modern HR strategy known as job enrichment, and basically it means making an employee's role more fulfilling.
How can companies do that, then?
Well, when a company wants to retain its best talent, it needs to offer compelling reasons to stay.
That could mean a higher salary, new responsibilities or more challenging tasks which is essentially what job enrichment is.
It originated in American startups based on two key theories about work from the 20th century.
Herzberg's Two Factor Theory and the Job Characteristics Theory which was introduced by psychologist Richard Hackman and economist Greg Oldham.
In the 1950s American psychologist Friedrich Herzberg argued that keeping employees motivated requires two essential elements.
First, the hygiene factors which include salary, working conditions, professional relationships, and job security.
Then the motivators which involve offering recognition, stimulating tasks, and opportunities for career advancement.
Meanwhile, Hackman and Oldham identified 5 core factors that determine job satisfaction, skill variety, task identity, task significance, autonomy and feedback.
What does this all mean in an actual job, though?
In practice, a manager or HR professional focused on job enrichment will sit down with employees to discuss their roles, career development and the level of autonomy they have. The idea is to provide a sense of future growth within the company and or improve their working conditions, all with the goal of retaining them.
AIHR .com cites an employee becoming a buddy for new hires as one example of what job enrichment could look like in practice.
Another is a scenario where a manager assigns one of their charges a project, a deadline and some basic guidelines, trusting the team member to get the job done on their own or reach out if necessary.
There you have it. Now you know what job enrichment is.
