Could gamophobia be hurting your relationship?
Thanks for asking.
Committing to a romantic relationship is, by its very nature, a significant transition in a person's life.
And that can often be a source of stress or conflict between partners.
For example, one partner might want to move in together, get married or have a child, while the other simply won't entertain the thoughts.
For some people, fear of commitment is just a way to delay decisions.
But for others, it's a genuine, panic-inducing fear that's known as gamophobia.
An extreme fear of commitment can stem from several psychological factors.
Writing for Psychology Today.
In April 2024, American psychologist Mark Travers said that gamophobia typically results from an interplay of factors both internal and external.
He went on to outline three key factors.
The first of which was traumatic experiences.
It's difficult to envision a future with someone when past relationships have caused pain, especially if they were abusive.
The second was a desire for independence.
For some, committing in a relationship feels akin to losing personal freedoms and makes them feel trapped.
Whereas for others, it's about making concessions willingly.
And thirdly, gamophobia is linked to other relational issues unrelated to love.
It often affects individuals with low self-esteem stemming from traumatic relationships.
Could you say that we're all a little gamophobic?
It's a bit more complex than that.
People with gamophobia exhibit behaviours linked to their fear.
They create a particular atmosphere within the relationship, often unintentionally.
It usually involves isolation, withdrawal and noticeable denial.
And what's more, they prefer not to discuss the issue if that means they can avoid confronting it.
Gamophobia also includes an intense fear of marriage or having a child, generating high anxiety that can lead to sleep problems.
As a self-defense mechanism.
Gammaphobic individuals might try to escape the relationship once anxiety sets in.
Like with all phobias, these symptoms can last for many years.
One way is through commitment symbolizing rituals or ceremonies.
The Psychology Today feature I mentioned earlier references a study from 2020 which was published in the Journal of Social and Personal Relationships.
It suggested that rituals reshape couples' perceptions of their partners, offering the opportunity to view them in a new light.
These can be based around symbols or metaphors that have personal significance.
Another question you might want to address is whether both partners are happy with the nature of the relationship itself.
If not, it might be time to pursue a more safe and fulfilling relationship dynamic by creating customized commitment agreements or considering a companionate relationship which prioritizes companionship, friendship and emotional intimacy over romantic or sexual connection.
