My name is Jack, and I'm here with my co -host, Sochal.
And today we are doing another collocation episode.
And for those of our listeners out there that don't know what a collocation is, a collocation is a combination of words that are commonly used together in a natural way by native speakers of a language.
So a collocation, sorry, sometimes non -native speakers will put combinations of words together that are grammatically correct, but they sound awkward or strange to a native speaker.
And that's because of collocation.
Collocation is word combinations that sound natural to social and me.
but might not sound natural to a non -native speaker because they may not know that collocation.
So I'm trying to, I mean, there's so many, right, Sochal?
I mean, just like, yeah, just thousands of word combinations that you could think of that just sound natural to us.
So what I'm going to do is I'm going to quiz Sochal.
I'm going to give you a verb, and then I'll give you the rest of the phrase, and you tell me which words match the verb to create the correct collocation.
So our first one, our first verb is break.
And the words that go with break are support, so break support, break a conclusion, or break new ground.
Break new ground. Yes, you are correct.
And what does it mean to break new ground?
um it kind of means that we have another kind of saying in english that's like hitting the ceiling which means uh basically the ceiling is what's been done before so when you break new ground it's kind of that idea of like you shattering um whatever has been done up to that point and kind of venturing
through something like a breakthrough that's another communication yeah or that might be a word actually so a breakthrough yeah yes yeah um i just have the the dictionary definition is to do something innovative or unprecedented so to do something that has never been done before so exactly like social

And what does it mean to lend support?
Um, it means to essentially just support someone, I guess, like offering your support to someone.
Yeah, just helping someone, right?
I think help is the same meaning, right?
To lend support or to help.
It can be the same thing.
Yeah. Okay, good. And our last one, our last verb is draw.
And so we have draw support, draw a conclusion or draw new ground.
draw a conclusion excellent and what does it mean to draw a conclusion um it just means basically put two and two together and it i don't know how to how else to say it well how would you say jack i guess to reach a decision or opinion based on evidence or reasoning so right yeah yeah i'm trying to
think of like an example but like i guess i'd say like you you have a thought process so let's say that um you have a crush on someone and you're walking and you see them uh hugging somebody else and you're like oh they I guess they have a a partner like they have a already have a boyfriend or a girlfriend
you're drawing a conclusion based on what you saw that's a great example right somebody that you want to date and but you you haven't talked to them or whatever or maybe you're just friends or something and you see them you know hugging and kissing another person, you can draw a conclusion and say,
oh, I guess he or she has a boyfriend or girlfriend.
So yeah, that's exactly what it means to draw a conclusion.
And so yeah, there you go, everybody.
Those are our three collocations for today.
Break new ground, lend support and draw a conclusion.
