Welcome to the A to Z English podcast.
My name is Jack, and I'm here with my co -host, Sochal.
And today we have another co -location episode.
and social I'm just going to for students who are listening to this episode first I'm just going to define what a collocation is and a collocation is a combination of words that are commonly used together in a natural way by native speakers of a language so it's word word pairings that just sound right
to native speakers you know it's not necessarily grammatically well it doesn't have to be grammatically correct necessarily or sometimes it's um a wrong collocation is grammatically correct um but it just we just don't say that you know it just doesn't feel right and so i don't know just am i making
sense right now i think you are i think oops sorry i think you are i think that um it's just something that almost becomes innate to fluent speakers of the language yeah i think collocation is like the last um leg of the journey like if you're climbing mount everest this would be like the the last uh
i don't know the last point before base base camp before you reach the peak you know yeah yeah because because collocation is just there's just so many uh weird expressions or way combinations of words that just make sense to us and there's just no other way to to really learn it than to kind of keep
practicing and just kind of internalize it eventually you'll get there but um Okay, so for this episode, I'm going to give Sochal three verbs and then three words or phrases that go with those verbs.
And she has to figure out which one is correct.
So our first verb is raise, raise.
And we have three examples here, doubt, a grudge, and objections.
and this one is a little tricky because i think there could be two answers here there could be two answers i'm gonna go with ray's objection yes you are right that is the okay that is the book answer but um because raise a doubt i feel like could also be is that the second one you were thinking of yep
raised out it is definitely a collocation as well so yeah it's we got a we got a one plus one situation here um two for the price of one i guess yeah two birds with one stone yeah we're getting all our idioms mixed up um what does it mean to raise objections if you if you do that what what are you doing
raising an objection is like say two people are getting married and they say if anyone knows a reason that these two should not be wed um please raise objection now basically which is please stand up and say no these two shouldn't be married and this is why so it's kind of to object to something is to
say no to something basically right to express disapproval or disagreement so if your boss says you know instead of one hour lunch now you have 30 minutes um a lot of the employees are going to raise objections right they're going to say no this is not fair we should get one hour for lunch um so yeah
it's a very very common uh expression um or collocation i should use the right word there number two is cast cast objections cast doubt cast a grudge i'm gonna say cast doubt you are correct and what does it mean to cast doubt um same it's like maybe if someone said oh i'm an ivy league graduate or something
um and then being like i don't know i kind of doubt that guy's really an ivy league graduate He seems like a scammer or a liar.
Right, right. She's like a liar.
He's suspicious. Yeah, you're casting doubt on them because that was a great word.

You're casting a suspicion.
You're throwing a suspicion on them, basically.
That's a great way to put it, too.
too, like, like social said, like putting your, your, your, well, you're casting doubt, you're throwing cast means throw and doubt means suspicion.
So you're throwing suspicion onto somebody, you know, you're saying like your story doesn't sound true.
And you're casting doubt.
Yeah. Okay, good. And students, I'll, I'll put the definitions in the show notes.
So you don't have to just listen and remember you can also read this in the show notes the last one is hold um hold a grudge hold a doubt hold objections hold a grudge definitely yeah and what does it mean to hold a grudge holding a grudge this is something if you're the type to hold a grudge you're
the type that can't easily let things go like you're the type that if someone missed you or and for our listeners who don't know missing is like kind of um how would you explain myth jack like you're you're a little bit annoyed or insulted by somebody somebody wronged you yeah but in a petty way i would say
missing is kind of petty like someone wronged you in a petty way you can't let that go Like you have a hard time forgiving and forgetting.
So you hold a grudge.
Yeah, you maintain feelings of resentment or anger for long periods of time.
So let's say in high school, somebody bullied you.
And 20 years later, you still hate that person.
You're just like, if I see that person, I'm going to punch him right in the face, you know.
And that's holding a grudge.
would you say that would be holding a grudge I would say yeah I think it is holding a grudge I mean maybe it's justified in a sense like a childhood bully can cause a lot of trauma that you carry on into adulthood that's true if it's really bad you know depending there's levels of course but I think
it is holding a grudge because you know at a certain stage of your life you can always choose to forgive and forget as well and you know that's something that that all of us can work on i mean i'm sure there are people who are um saints and don't hold grudges but most people i know have at least a couple
grudges in there somewhere yeah yeah there's probably some hidden ones we don't know about um you know holding a grudge is it's bad for your health you know what i mean like it's better to let those those emotions go um well i i i got a quote uh from uh the oprah winfrey show uh i heard it on there
it someone somebody said holding a grudge is like drinking poison and expecting the other person to die so that's a good way to put it yeah right like other people should feel bad about what they did to you but they don't you're the one still feeling bad all this time later right and it's gonna kill
your health your immune system it's gonna wreck you and really doesn't have any effect on those people a lot of people you know they don't care they've moved on or whatever it may be so yeah I definitely whether justified or not it's something we could probably all work on but yeah that is the correct
