China has pledged intensified efforts to protect the flyways of migratory birds – that is according to the National Development and Reform Commission.
According to an action plan made by the Commission, along with other departments, China aims to place 90 % of important habitats along bird migration routes in the country under effective protection by 2030.
The country is home to more than 1 ,500 bird species, accounting for 13 % of the world's total and over 800 of them are migratory.
Four out of nine main flyways of bird migration on the planet pass through China.
To improve the protection of 821 important habitats, along the four routes, efforts will be ratcheted up to rein in pollution, curb invasive alien species, as well as to optimise data collection and promote harmony between humans and birds.
You're listening to Special English If you are a fan of traditional Chinese music, you might already know the renowned piece called A Hundred Birds Paying Homage to the Phoenix.
As its name suggests, this melody captured the chorus of myriad bird songs, symbolizing the transition from night to dawn, played predominantly on sauna.
It's warm and cheerful notes often stir a deep appreciation for nature among listeners.
The phrase, a hundred birds, actually represents far more than hundreds of species.
In the Chinese language, people People tend to use the word a hundred to describe abundance and diversity.
As I mentioned earlier, there are more than 1 ,500 bird species in China.
Little wonder that so many composers have gained inspiration from such bountiful nature.
Since ancient times, the Chinese people have revered and loved nature, giving birth to a rich social and political culture that is related to this cause.
As early as more than 4 ,000 years ago, rules and laws aimed at protecting biodiversity treaty, began to appear in China, including the institutions that enforced those rules and laws.
In ancient China, environmental protection was under the charge of a particular government department, which was similar to an environmental ministry in modern times.
According to the Book of Documents, one of the five classics of ancient Chinese literature, the first such official was a man called Buoyi, who was described as an environmental protection expert and an able assistant to a man called Da Yu, whose speciality was water management.
Buoyi invented a specially designed well to protect people's drinking water from pollution.
He also knew a lot about animals and called for animal protection.
In the following Qin dynasty over two thousand years ago, environmental protection legislation in its true sense appeared, which was recorded in the Law of the Field, which is seen as China's earliest environmental act.
After the Qin, most of the Chinese imperial dynasties had their own Laws of the Field, logging various environmental protection rules.
Among them, two interesting ones stood out.
Firstly, a stream bed may not be blocked.
Secondly, burning grass and trees with the aim of making fertiliser was prohibited, except during the summer.
The second one is especially relevant today, as it can help alleviate air pollution, and reduce the number of smoky days.
Throughout history, Chinese thinkers like Guan Zhong and philosophers such as Laozi and Confucius, underscored harmony between in humanity and nature.
Guang Zhong, who lived over 2 ,600 years ago during the spring and autumn period, advocated cherishing the farming season in the spring, including cultivating spring seedlings.
things. He called for people to be on alert for any wildfires in forests, or near lakes, so as to protect the growth of grass and trees.
He opposed killing young birds and beasts.
He attached great importance to managing ditches and pounds to ensure water storage.
Humanity humanity follows the earth, the earth follows heaven, heaven follows Tao, and the Tao follows what is natural.
It is a well -known quote by ancient Chinese philosopher Lao Tzu.
Taoism views the laws of nature as the highest rule of the universe and humanity.
It is also said that Confucius, the great philosopher of Confucianism, only used a fishing rod when fishing.
He never used a fishing net, which he believed could be damaging, to nature's fish stocks.
When he hunted birds, he never targeted those that were resting in their nests.
Mencius, an inheritor, a developer of Confucian ideology, advocated loving not only one's compatriots, but also the animals and plants found in nature.
He also noted that as long as you till the land in the right farming season, the land will always provide enough grain.
As long as people refrain from placing fishing nets into ponds, the pond will keep providing fish.
As long as we log in a forest with a mindset of sustainability, the forest will keep providing enough timber.
even to this day, these principles continue to resonate as China navigates modern environmental challenges drawing on centuries of wisdom in its approach to sustainability and conservation.
