Come on! Let's master English.
Hello everybody, welcome back to Daily EZ English Expression, the podcast. Oh boy, today's expression, listen carefully.
To breathe over someone's shoulder.
to breathe over someone's shoulder.
So you have to imagine that you are sitting at a desk and you're typing on the keyboard and your boss comes up behind you and they put their head right behind your head, kind of over your right shoulder, and they're going, looks good Shane.
Keep up the good work.
what are you doing Shane do you like that do you like it when your boss or your teacher or your brother or sister or husband or wife or mother or father or somebody do you like it when someone breathes over your shoulder I hate it I can't stand it I had a boss like that yeah is when I worked in Korea his name was uh I'll use his name what the heck Dr. Min Yes Dr. Min.
I worked with Dr. Min for many many years we had a very good working relationship but one thing he did that I hated was breathing over my shoulder and he was constantly breathing over my shoulder.
He didn't need to. I was a good employee and he was always satisfied with my work but he was constantly breathing over my shoulder and I tell ya some people when they breathe over your shoulder it's not Not just the breathing, it's the breath, sometimes it smells.
If they smoke, if they were drinking, if they ate some weird food, they're killing me, man.
Quit breathing over my shoulder.
Quit watching very closely what I do.
Leave me alone, don't bother me.
Let me do my job, let me do my work.
I do not need to be watched.
I do not need close supervision.
This is the idea of breathing over someone's shoulder.
Do you like it when somebody breathes over your shoulder?
But wait a minute. Do you sometimes breathe over someone's shoulder?
Do you have a husband or a wife?
Let's say you're a guy, and you have a wife, and she's in the kitchen cooking.
do you go to the kitchen sometimes and breathe over your wife's shoulder and you don't actually have to be over your wife's shoulder you can just be in the same room.
What are you doing honey is that salt?
how much salt are you putting in there?
don't put too much salt in there, I don't like too much salt just a little bit of salt please.
Please put some pepper in there too.
Not too much pepper just a little bit of pepper your wife's gonna kill you let's check out a dialogue Oh Tim is constantly breathing over your shoulder oh I know he's really nervous about the report how's it going oh it's almost finished ok now in that dialogue I kind of understand the boss is Tim and Tim is breathing over the guy's shoulder because he's nervous about a report.
So he wants the report done perfectly.
Yeah, sometimes your boss is going to breathe over your shoulder.
If it's a really important job or if there's a deadline, if it's something very crucial, then your boss is gonna breathe over your shoulder.
Yeah, I understand.
It happens, okay? We all, at one time or another, we all breathe over somebody's shoulder.
But don't make it a habit.
Yeah, it's not a good habit.
It's really not a good habit.
Let's check out the dialogue two more times.
If you can think of an example of somebody breathing over your shoulder or when you breathe over somebody else's shoulder, let me know.
You can let me know on Facebook, ESL, CoachShane, or on Twitter, at coachshane.
