Now, you've probably noticed that I'm not in my office today.
I'm in a completely different location.
And that's because I am at my parents-in-law's house.
So my parents-in-law are essentially my partner's parents, and I'm surrounded by three dogs, including Freya.
So if you hear any noises in the background, it's them.
Okay, let's get started with the lesson.
We'll begin with the first sound, oh.
To create the oh sound, you just round your lips and vibrate your vocal cords.
It's very simple.
Oh, oh.
This sound is in words like bot. not cot.
Notice that this is a very short sound.
The second sound is or.
This is a very similar position to or, but pay attention to the length of the vowel.
This one is a longer vowel sound.
This long O sound is in words like bought, caught and nought.
Our final sound is O, O. So you start with a schwa, a very, very relaxed position.
Then you move into an O sound.
Now this pronunciation is received pronunciation.
What I'm going to teach you is modern received pronunciation, which is o so received pronunciation o and modern received pronunciation o notice that the jaw drops more o Now I have two reasons why I want to teach you the modern received pronunciation over the received pronunciation.
That's simply because one, you will hear more people using the modern received sound and two, is the one i use, so it makes sense for me to teach you the sound that i use.
So this o sound is in words like boat, coat and note, if you're curious what it sounds like in received pronunciation Boat coat, note.
There's really not that much difference.
Just choose the way that you prefer.
But keep in mind that more people use the O pronunciation, the modern received one.
And many people perceive O, the received pronunciation way, as a bit more posh.
So let's now compare these sounds in words together.
We have bot bought boat bot bought boat, cot, court, coat, cot, court, coat, knot, nought, note, NOT NOTE Now let's practice these words in sentences.
If you need more time to listen and repeat, then feel free to pause the video.
