After over three decades of relentless searching, the golden owl was finally found on October 3 2024.
This €150000 treasure was hidden back in 1993 by writer Regis Hauser, who took on the pseudonym Max Valentin to publish Sur les traces de la chouette d'or On the Trail of the Golden Owl.
The book has 11 riddles, each one a clue to the owl's secret location, setting off what would become the longest-running treasure hunt ever organised.
More than 200,000 enthusiasts, known as Shweters, joined the chase.
What does the golden owl look like?
The golden owl is no ordinary treasure.
Designed by artist Michael Becker and crafted by a jeweller.
The sculpture depicts an owl with its wings fully spread, stretching about 50 centimetres across and weighing about 10 kilograms.
Made primarily of silver, with gold accents on the wings and head.
Its face is set with rubies and diamonds.
The treasure's discovery was announced on the Shweta's forum by Becker himself.
He confirmed that the Kautamark a marker left to confirm the owl's location was found along with the final solution.
The organisers have promised to exchange the stand-in with the genuine golden owl.
Are there other famous treasure hunts like this one?
Absolutely.
In 2010, art collector Forrest Fenn hid a chest somewhere in the Rocky Mountains, offering clues to its whereabouts in a poem from his book Thrill of the Chase.

The treasure contained 65 gold coins, hundreds of gold nuggets, hundreds of rubies, eight emeralds, two Ceylon sapphires, many diamonds, two ancient Chinese jade carvings and more.
More than 350,000 searchers took up Fenn's challenge, combing through the Rockies' rugged terrain, and four even lost their lives.
The risks were so high that New Mexico police urged Fenn to end the hunt, a plea he ignored.
In June 2020, a medical student found the treasure in Wyoming.
But, in line with Fenn's wishes, kept the exact location secret to preserve the site.

Yes.
In 2021, Michael Becker, creator of the Golden Owl, launched a new quest the treasure of the Entente Cordiale.
This historic chest, originally gifted to French President Émile Loubet by King Edward VII, is now valued at 750000 euros and remains hidden somewhere in mainland France.
To claim it, hunters need to crack nine riddles in a book that hints at its secret location.
Becker even hinted on Facebook in April 2024 that fresh clues and updates are on the way.
