Aubrey. I'm on Business English. I'm excited.
You know, welcome, Jessica. We don't get to have you here very often on the Business English podcast, so it feels very celebratory.
How are you? I like that word, celebratory.
That's an awesome adjective. I'm I'm great, guys.
I'm here for two reasons. First, we're going to talk about how to win at conferences, which is super fun.
And then, guys, we're going to talk about an amazing opportunity, our Back to School Connection bundle.
I'm so excited about this. But first, let's think about this conference thing.
So we got... We got an email from a student, and this is the whole reason for today's podcast episode.
Aubrey, can you read that email? Yes. This is really important, you guys, and a lot of you are probably in this same boat.
So the email said, I know that a lot of you guys are feeling that.
You may have a conference on the horizon that you're going to be going to or another opportunity where you know you will need to speak English confidently.
And that is the difficult part is can you do it without feeling that fear, without being afraid to connect?
Right? I mean, you guys are listening to the Business English podcast for a reason, right?
You need to feel comfortable. You need this confidence in so many different situations.
Situations that have a little more pressure than just I'm saying hi to my neighbor, right?
It could be a networking event, a trade fair, a big meeting maybe.
There's so many high-pressure situations that require confidence and focus. fearlessness in English.
And it seems just impossible to get there sometimes.
Yes, there could be a lot of negative repercussions.
If you don't have that confidence, if you attend that conference and are still afraid, you might end up going and making zero connections.
You could be in your head the whole time, self-conscious, missing out on some really great opportunities to expand your network. have these fulfilling conversations.
And that would be such a tragedy to spend this time and money and then not be able to make the most of it.
Exactly, exactly. So Aubrey, why do you think this happens?
I mean, there could be a lot of reasons why we're lacking that confidence, right?
Why this specific student... is feeling fear, even just thinking about going to this conference, being surrounded by native speakers.
Obviously, there could be a lot of different reasons, but what do you think is one major reason why our students lack this confidence?
Yeah. A big part of it is often just a lack of opportunity to practice, right?
Lack of ways to learn and then use real English.
It's tough when you're busy. You guys are working and it's difficult to stay motivated when you don't have a ton of free time and when you're not surrounded by native speakers.
Right. Yeah. We hear these reasons from students a lot, just like...
It's so easy to feel like, well, I'm just going to give up.
When do I even get to practice this English?
When do I get to challenge myself? I don't have these opportunities, right?
Well, here's the thing, guys. This Back to School Connection bundle that I talked about earlier, this bundle solves all of those issues, even if your issue is, I don't have the specific vocab.
I don't know how to be formal and informal in English.
All of these hurdles that get in your way.
This back to school connection bundle solves all of those things.
Yes. In the Connected Communicator course, which is part of this bundle, you're able to learn from over 70 real Native interviews.
So you're learning vocabulary, grammar, listening skills to talk about deep topics from culture to racism, food, gun ownership, everything in between.
Exactly. This is your chance to practice that tough stuff before you have to use it, right?
Then you can use all of these amazing new English skills you're learning in the practice activities.
I made brand new conversation practice activities that are amazing, right?
And of course, with the other students. But more on that in a minute, guys.
So what is our number one tip today for students to win their next conference?
Yes, you guys have to be challenging yourself.
You have to be taking risks now. If you are just learning language, but not actually using it, practicing using this real English, you won't be ready.
When you have that opportunity to speak to someone, it will be really easy to let fear and a lack of confidence take over.
So now is when you need to prepare. Exactly.
Exactly, guys. It's so easy to stay comfortable.
I mean, if you guys are listening to us right now and understanding most of what we say, this is a comfortable thing to listen to, right?
We want you guys to listen to tough stuff.
You guys have to practice putting yourself into uncomfortable situations so you can be ready for anything, right?
And if you're Listen to like scientific podcasts that are made for native speakers.
That sounds tough, but you know what, guys?
You can do it. Like Hidden Brain, for example.
That's an awesome show. Or Ologies. Do you ever listen to Ologies?
No, I haven't heard of that one. Ologies with Allie Ward.
I have friends that are obsessed with this podcast.
It's so good. But also in speaking, right?
You need to find some speaking partners.
You need to get out there in the world, online, whatever you have access to.
Find speaking partners and material that will challenge you.
Try to talk about topics that you don't normally talk about, right?
You really, again, it's all about taking risks and challenging yourself now so you're ready for those difficult opportunities in the future.
Exactly. Right. You're doing the research by listening to these interesting podcasts, getting the great vocabulary.

And then you can come prepared to express your real opinions, your real thoughts.
