Hey, Lindsay, how are you?
Good, Michelle.
How's everything for you?
Yeah, I'm doing well.
Thanks.
I'm doing well.
But I have a question for you.
Yes.
Have you ever been cooking dinner?
And you are making the dinner and then you realize that you didn't have an ingredient that you thought you had.
Oh my gosh.
It hasn't happened because I don't cook much, but I guess it's happened in my kitchen before.
So in that case, what did we do?
We just walked to the grocery store.
Yeah.
The days of knocking on neighbor's doors and asking for a cup of sugar.
I don't know.
I don't know if it's a thing anymore, unfortunately.
Yeah.
Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, exactly.
Yeah, so if you run out of something and then you, I mean, last night actually we had a taco night.
Nice.
And we realized that we'd run out of salsa, which was sad.
Uh-oh.
We made up for it with just lots of cut tomatoes to still get some sort of taste for it.
But yeah, out of salsa.
But today we're going to answer a listener question from YouTube.
Lindsay, would you like to read the question?
Yes.
And by the way, guys, don't forget All Ears English is over on YouTube.
So search for us over there if you prefer to learn on YouTube, and hit the subscribe button on our channel.
All right.
So this comes from Zamba Tian DW9FT, and they said, thank you so much.
Could you please explain how to use out of?
I get really confused about it.
Okay.
Yeah.
Good question.
Very good question.
And we're going to get really deep into this because there's a lot of ways that out of can be used.
Yes.
So guys, like we said, remember, hit that follow button wherever you're listening.
Make it easier on yourself.
And yeah, Lindsay, should we get into it?
Yeah, let's get into it.
We're going to get into a little grammar here, maybe a little a few expressions.
So out of is seen everywhere in English, right?
Oh, my gosh.
It's all over the place.
Yeah.
Yes, exactly.
So there are many different ways to use this.
And we're going to go over a few of them today.
Um, so the first one is, it means, you know, that you don't have any more of something.
Um, right.
So physically or even more metaphorically, so we don't have it and we once did.
So this goes back to my salsa story.
I, we were out of salsa.
We usually have, it is sad.
Um, are you a mild, medium or hot salsa family?
I would say that, I mean, I like spicy food, but I'm typically for salsa a medium.
What about you?
Medium.
That's me too.
I'm medium.
But I think probably the spiciest one is probably not too bad because it's such a commercial product.
Unless you buy like a very specific one at a farmer's market, that could be dangerously spicy.
Yeah.
Yes.
But so in the workplace, you might hear it like this.
We are out of paper.
Can you order some more?
Perfect.
Or, well, we're out of time.
Let's continue this tomorrow, right?
At the end of a a talk or a meeting or something, right?
We've run out of time.
Yep.
Or I'm out of energy.
Let's take a break and come back after lunch.
Yeah.
It's important to be able to admit when you, I mean.
Our energy waxes and wanes throughout the day, throughout the workday.
And you have to admit, if you're hungry, maybe you're losing energy or it's the end of the day, right?
You need a coffee break.
Got to be able to say it, right?
Do you ever feel like when you're in that moment where you've lost your energy like oh, like.
I'm just done for the day?
Like I can't.
And then, and then you do take that break and you're like, oh, okay, actually I'm good.
Yeah.
Yeah.
It can feel really overwhelming.
Usually it's if I'm hungry.
Um, it's amazing how like needing food makes you so tired sometimes.
Yeah.
Yeah.
Or sometimes after you have food, you're so tired.
Oh, it's true too.
Yeah.
Yeah.
That happened to me over the weekend.
I did a meditation retreat and I fell asleep during the meditation.
Oh, no.
Maybe I should stop eating during these things, you know, just not eat the lunch, you know?
Yeah.
Yeah.
So where else?
But what's another way that it's.
Oh, OK.
So short in numbers.
Right.
When we're talking about ratios or fractions.
Like three out of four of our clients have written reviews,
We should ask for one more.
Or nine out of ten dentists agree on the best toothpaste.
I wonder what that is.
I'd like to know.
Don't you hear that always on the commercial?
It's always like nine out of ten dentists yeah they, all these brands, they have their data, you know, and very suspicious data we don't know.
Yeah, down.
So my, my husband is a dentist, so he's always like yeah i Oh, he wants to be asked.
Yeah, I know.
Who are these dentists that get asked, right?
I don't know.
He wants to get the call.
Yeah, exactly.
So another one is, it means one of many, right?
Yes, that's a good one.
So for example, out of 10 work shirts, I could only find one that fit me right.
Or I can't believe we got picked to present out of all the applicants.
Yes.
So, as we can see out of really comes in different places in the language depending on what the context is of what we're trying to say Michelle.
Right.
So you're about to make a trade based on a friend's text.
But which you do you listen to?
Is it we could buy a house in Tulum?
Get optioning those options. we could lose everything.
Or let's do a little research.
Get your head in the trade and make the investment decision that's right for you.
Learn more at finra.org slash trade smart.
All right, Michelle, let's teach just a couple more.
All right.
Okay.
All right.
So the one more out of the out of the last two we will teach is physical.
So you're once in some place and then you leave.
So I just saw him walk out of the building.
I think he's on his lunch break.
So physically exiting something, right?
Or something is coming out of something else.
Like he took his laptop out of his briefcase, right?
And then the last one we want to highlight is a material, right?
So to be made out of something.
So, you know, our clothing is made out of the finest quality materials.
Or this desk is made out of pure oak.
Right.
Yes.
Yeah.
So my mom used to complain that like nothing's made out of real wood anymore, you know?
Yeah.
She's always want to buy the real wood, real, real things.
And everything's kind of made of composite now, which is like a weird fake wood plastic.
I don't know what it is.
Yeah.
Yeah.
Yeah.
Yeah.
So um, as you can see, there are many different ways to use out of.
Let's just go through real fast and kind of review them.
So we taught five Yes.
Yes.
So the first one was not having any more.
We are out of something.
Yep, that's exactly.
And then the next one was numbers and ratios like three out of four dentists agree.
Right.
The third one was one of many.
So out of all the applicants we got chosen.
Yeah.
The next one was physical.
So when something exits something else.
So, for example, he's let's see, I just saw him walk out of the building. or he took his laptop out of his briefcase.
Okay.
And then the last one was material.
So something that is made out of something else.
So this desk is made out of the finest quality materials.
Yes.
Perfect.
Which one do we think is most common, Michelle?
I mean, these are all common.
Oh, they're all common.
Yeah.
They're everywhere.
Yeah.
But yeah.
And you know these are important for both in and out of work.
Saying out of it it's a very functional, that this is functional, yeah right, so you'll use it constantly.
There are so many different ways to use it.
Um, I don't think you can go for a whole day without hearing this.
What do you think?
I would challenge someone to try, but no, I don't think they could.
Now I'm going to listen for the rest of the day and see when it comes.
Yeah, yeah, for sure.
Let's do a role play.
So here, Michelle, we are at a lunch meeting.
All right.
Okay.
All right.
Here we go.
Sorry, they just told me they are out of the soup you want.
Oh, that's okay.
I don't need it.
So let's get started.
I just got word that we were chosen out of 10 different companies for the Miller account.
Whoa, that's amazing.
Yes, only 30 out of 100 applicants were even considered.
I am so thrilled.
Oh, just so you know, Trish is on her way.
She texted that she just walked out of the office.
I told her it's freezing and she said it's okay because her coat is made out of goose feathers.
Side point, right?
Side point.
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
Got a little distracted there.
We won the deal.
I was excited, but now... Yeah, exactly.
You know, I'm a little flighty.
Yeah.
Oh, good stuff.
So here, let's see which versions we used here.
So first, you said, sorry, they just told me they're out of the soup.
So meaning no longer have... Something that they used to have, yeah.
Yeah.
And I think there's a special number they use in restaurants for this.
It's like 76 or something.
I don't know.
If you work in a kitchen...
I think 86 is like, oh, don't put this on it.
I think it's like 86 to something.
I think.
I have a good question.
I have to look that up.
Yeah, you really got to work in a kitchen.
They've got their own lingo, but they do have a number they attach to it.
If we've maxed out, we've run out of something and they'll just announce it.
Kind of cool.
Yeah.
What else?
I here we did.
I just got word that we were chosen out of 10 different companies for the Miller account.
So one out of many.
Yes.
Good.
And then I said, yes, only 30 out of 100 applicants were even considered.
So again, that's similar to the one out of, similar to the last one, focusing on that, you know, kind of percentage or ratio right, um.
And then i moved on to the trish situation.
I said she just texted that she walked out of the office so she was in.
Now she's out yes um, good.
And then we're talking about her jacket, because her jacket is made out of right, made out of goose feathers.
So that means that is the contents of her jacket, right?
So she's okay to come to the meeting.
Maybe we work in a place that has really bad air conditioning.
Sometimes, if you go to the South, like Florida, everywhere you go is so strong the air conditioning is like out of control.
Did you notice that in Florida?
Yeah, I know in general, air conditioning is very strong, like in stores and offices.
Oh, that's always a big thing.
Yeah, but it would be kind of weird though, because she'd have her feather coat, her goose down coat, with her.
And if there's air conditioning running, I don't know.
I don't know what's happening here.
Sounds like a nice coat.
I don't know.
Yeah, nice coat.
All right, Michelle, what's another episode our listeners could check out?
Guys, check out episode 495 of the Business English podcast.
That was Don't Kick the Can Down the Road.
Address it in English now.
Okay.
And our final takeaway.
I mean it's a great question, but it's such a broad question from our listener here on YouTube, right?
Because the reality is, is that out of is everywhere.
You just need to look at the context of what you're trying to say.
Yeah.
You're going to hear it constantly.
It's very functional and, um, but it's like, so in that case, it's very useful.
You're going to need it.
You need to be comfortable using this.
So give it a try.
See how you might use it in your workplace today.
All right.
Sounds good, Michelle.
Talk to you soon.
Have a good day.
All right.
