Greetings, everyone.
It's my pleasure to welcome you on this glorious Tuesday to Radio Headspace.
My name is K. Songa.
Today's episode is dedicated to that portion of our psyche that pertains to a person's self -esteem or self -importance.
We are sometimes aware of it and at other times fully oblivious to it.
What am I referring to?
I'm talking about the ego, faithful listeners.
To me, a healthy ego sounds like someone who is confident and has high self -esteem.
Not at the arrogant or narcissistic level, but at the appropriate level.
So in fact, they are able to humble themselves at the right time.
But with anyone, there are definitely moments when the ego takes over and gets a bit out of control.
I've been guilty of this for sure.
This brings to mind a specific incident at my local YMCA.
On this particular day, when I arrived at the gym, it was pretty much empty.
So I just went inside to quickly shoot a few hoops by myself.
I was in no shape to run a full court game.
Anyway, little by little, guys started to fill the gym.
I was easing myself out of the gym when one of the guys asked me to join in on the game.
Now, I knew I should have immediately said no, but it was a young college kid that asked me.
He said, you want to play some ball, old man?
And that's when my ego kicked in.
Hell yeah, is what I remember replying.
Now, these were all young college kids.
So as soon as the game started, they were off and running.
And there are certain sports that will immediately let you know what kind of shape you're in.
Sports like track, swimming and soccer come to mind.
I would also put basketball in that category.
These kids were running up and down that full court with a plethora of energy.
It didn't take long for me to be sucking in air hard.
Somehow I made it to the end of that run.
My squad lost and I didn't even care.
My stomach had done three backflips in a row and had to make it to the bathroom pronto.
But of course, I couldn't run there.
Oh, no, my ego wasn't having that.
I played a cool, calm and collected and just strolled into the locker room where I promptly vomited up my insides.
I was thoroughly spent.
Even as a mindfulness instructor, which I was at the time, I had succumbed to ego's seductive grasp.
Like I said before, I like to think that there is a sort of ego spectrum, if you will.
On one end is the narcissistic ego that is arrogant and unable to humble itself.
And then on the other end is the healthy ego that has high self -esteem, confidence, and is able to humble itself at the appropriate moments.
The key is to be able to decipher and recognize where on that spectrum you lie in certain circumstances.
And that's where mindfulness can play an important role.
Mindfulness teaches us about awareness of each moment as it shows up.
And it also teaches us about acceptance, which is all about seeing things as they are in the present moment, and acting accordingly.
Like saying no to that pickup basketball game, because I knew that I wasn't in the kind of shape necessary to play with those young college kids.
I was giving in to my impulses when someone called me an old man.
If I had acted more mindfully, I would have asked myself, am I really up for this?
And the answer would have been a non -judgmental, no, or maybe next time.
And that's a tip for you also.
Asking yourself, am I really up for this?
It can be a great way to put some space between you and your ego.
Then you can decide how to move forward from there.
But just keep in mind, this is easier said than done.
And we all falter at times, even us mindfulness instructors.
To help further navigate this phenomenon known as the Ego, the app has a great meditation course called Self Esteem, and another called Self Compassion.
Okay, let's stop there for today.

At Mid -Mobile, we like to do the opposite of what big wireless does.
They charge you a lot, we charge you a little.
