But for now, let's get on with the show.
Woo!
It's WeeWOW week.
Welcome back to WeeWOW, our hands-on crash course in Steam.
Fun 101 for the science seekers and inventoritos of tomorrow.
I'm Guy Raz.
And I eat my cereal with a fork.
What?
I mean, I'm Mindy.
It's day three of our WeWow Tinkering Challenge and we're back in our laboratory of bad ideas, ready to continue the project we started yesterday.
But first, if you're just joining us, go back to Monday's episode to catch up.
Don't worry.
We'll still be here when you finish.
This week, our WeWow Tinkering Challenge is to create the ultimate recess experience.
Yesterday, we had you identify a problem with recess as you know it, so you can solve that problem.
We had you write down or shout out all of the things that you love about recess.
Things you might expand on when you're exploring how to create the ultimate recess.
And today, it's time for the next steps of our tinkering process.
Plan, create, and test.
We'll be using our ultimate recess must-haves from yesterday to come up with a plan for our project.
And as we learn from those scientists in Finland, recess is good for both our bodies and our brains.
In fact, maybe there's something from your must-have list that, if taken to the next level, would exercise your body and your brain.
Mindy, I'm wondering if we could take each of our must-haves and expand on them to create something entirely new.
Ooh, great idea, Guy Razzi.
Uh, we could take my inflatable swimming pool.
Fill it with bonker balls?
Only we don't have bonker balls, so we're gonna have to use, uh, let me see what we've got here.
Nope, nope, ow, nope, nope, that's not, oh, how about this?
Glass light bulbs.
Uh... Okay, let me keep looking here.
Uh... Glass eyeballs?
Uh, no.
Okay, okay, hang on a second.
I got something here.
Uh... Oh!
Glass crystal balls.
Do you have anything in here that is not glass?
I mean, I've got these water balloons.
Already made?
I like to be prepared.
Okay, so we'll fill this inflatable baby pool with water balloons.
And then we'll see who can pop the most in the least amount of time.
I do like a timed physical challenge, but how are we going to pop the balloons, Mindy?
Oh, how about these swords?
Mindy, put those away.
You're going to poke my eyes out.
Why do you think I've got this whole bag of glass eyes to replace them?
There are no swords allowed at recess.
Fine, we'll just use our armpits Nutcracker style.
Huh?
You know, just stick a water balloon in your armpit like this.
Yes?
And then you're gonna slam your arm down like this.
Nutcracker!
Okay, well, much safer than a sword.
Here, you try it.
Okay, water balloon in my armpit.
And on the count of three, you're gonna nutcrack it.
One, two... Nutcracker!
I didn't say three!
What?
Mindy, this jacket is dry clean only.
Don't worry, Guy Raz.
There will be plenty of time to work out the kinks.
But for now, it's time to move on to the next step of our tinkering process.
We're going to take a quick break to clean up our mess here.
And when we come back, it's time to move on to the next step of our tinkering process.
But first a quick message for your grown-ups.

Welcome back to our Recess 101 WeWow Tinkering Challenge.
So far, we've identified our problem, explored ways to solve it, created our plan and now it's time to test it.
You know it.
The ultimate test of our ultimate recess is to see if it helps us to learn better, concentrate more or just make us smarter.
Okay, so to test our plan, we need to think of something that we do.
That requires a lot of concentration.
Maybe it's reading a book or memorizing math facts or cleaning your room.
For me, it's organizing my collection of heirloom beans.
And for me it's mixing up all of your heirloom beans into one big jar of beans and then trying to guess how many beans there are total.
That was you who mixed up all my beans?
I also mixed up all your nuts.
Mindy!
What?
They taste better that way.
I made you trail mix.
Okay well, to test whether our recess plan actually helps us to concentrate better, we're going to take all of my mixed beans and all of my mixed nuts And mix them all together.
This is my worst nightmare.
And then we'll see how well we're able to concentrate by testing how long it takes for us to separate them.
We'll set a timer.
And if one of us gets distracted and loses concentration, we'll set the timer all over again.
This will help us test whether our physical challenge helps our mental challenge.
Okay, well, I'll set up the inflatable pool filled with water balloons.
And I'll mix up all of your beans and nuts.
Then we can begin our test.
Ready?
Mixing up the nuts.
Mixing up the nuts.
Oh, sorry.
You just dropped something.
Oh, sorry.
Oh, they're everywhere.
All right.
All right.
Put them all together.
Mix them up.
Mixing them up.
Mixing them up.
Mixing them up.
We've got a trail mix.
That was easy. this was an Olympic-sized inflatable baby pool, Mindy?
Ooh, it's still a little squishy, Guy Raz.
I think it needs one more blow.
No way.
I'm all out of breath.
Oh, no, you don't have to blow into it, Guy Raz.
I've got an electric air pump to blow it up.
You had an electric air pump this whole time?
Uh-huh.
Why didn't you tell me?
You never asked.
Okay, ready to get started?
Let's do it!
Stopwatch ready!
On the count of three.
We're going to jump into the inflatable pool, crush all the water balloons we can with our armpits in ten minutes, and then we'll get out and start separating your beans from your nuts, trying not to get distracted.
Okay, on the count of three.
One, two, three!
Nutcracker!
Got it!
Guy Raz?
Once again, I'm all wet, Mindy.
Did I mention that this jacket is dry clean only?
Look at these elbow patches.
You know it wouldn't be a bad idea to remove your jacket before crushing water balloons with your armpits.
Guy Raz.
But then I would be violating the rules of your laboratory of bad ideas.
Fair point.
We'll get you a new jacket.
Okay well, now that we've completed our ultimate recess activity, are you ready to go see if it helped us to concentrate better?
Let's go separate some beans from nuts.
Without getting distracted.
Destination, concentration.
Timer set.
And go!
Go!
I think I'm just gonna take a little break here and have a snack.
Have you ever peeled a banana with your toes, Kairos?
Watch this!
You're getting distracted.
Look, I just invented fish pepperoni.
That's it.
That's what?
Mindy, the whole point of our ultimate recess plan with the water balloons and the inflatable pool, was to help us concentrate better, to reset our brains, to fully commit to the task at hand.
What task?
Well, that's exactly what I'm talking about.
Look at the data set here.
The first test or trial we did lasted exactly three three and a half seconds.
The second test lasted just over four seconds.
And the last one was exactly two seconds before you got distracted by your shrimp pepperoni.
Okay, it was fish pepperoni.
Shrimp is actually a crustacean, Guy Raz.
And you're getting distracted right now.
So what's your point?
Well, my point is, is that our ultimate recess plan clearly didn't work at all.
It was a dismal failure.
Oh, well, that's great.
What?
Well, we ran the test a few times, saw pretty much the same results every time, so that means there's room to improve on our ultimate recess plan.
It's all part of the tinkering process.
Okay, well, improving is gonna have to wait until tomorrow.
In the meantime, we've got a mess to clean up here in the Laboratory of Bad Ideas.
Okay, so just to recap for today's steps in the tinkering process, we gathered all of the materials we needed to create our ultimate recess plan, and then we put that plan into action.
We also came up with a way to test that plan by deciding on an activity that requires a lot of mental concentration.
And then we tested out our recess plan to see if it helped us concentrate on that activity.
One important thing to note you'll want to perform your concentration exercise before you try out your recess plan, so you have something to compare your testing data to.
In other words, see how well you're able to concentrate without recess before you test.
This will help you see if your recess plan actually made a difference or not.
So get to your creating and testing and meet us back here tomorrow as we get to the next steps in our tinkering process.
Tomorrow we get to improve on our ultimate recess design and retest it to see if our improvements made any difference.
And test.
Don't forget to clean up after yourself.
Great idea, Guy Raz.
Don't forget to clean up after yourself.
Peace out.
Wait, Mindy, where are you going?
All that recess made me ready for a nap.
Mindy!
Oh, and before we go, we want to hear how your WeWow Tinkering Challenge is going.
Leave us a short message at 1-888-7-WOW-WOW and tell us all about your ultimate recess plan.
What is it?
What's going well?
What's going wrong?
Your message just might be used this Friday on WeWow.
That's 1-888-7-WOW-WOW.
And meet us back here tomorrow for the next steps in our tinkering challenge.
Until then, who wows?
