Headspace studio. Hey, it's Dora.
Welcome to Radio Headspace and to Tuesday.
As some of you may know, I teach an eight -week mindfulness -based stress reduction program, aka MBSR.
Once a week, I meet with my class and we are fully immersed in all things mindfulness.
After our second class, a student bravely shared how they didn't think they were benefiting from the course because each time they tried to meditate, their mind was so restless and filled with so many different thoughts.
So I told him that this is what awareness is.
The awareness that so much is happening in our mind is actually a part of developing our meditation practice.
It's actually a good thing, and for now, it's enough.
Nothing else is needed.
Just simply being aware of the condition of the mind.
And this is a common misconception with meditation.
Similar to what that student had mentioned, when we notice that the mind is moving from past to future and future to past, we worry we aren't doing a good job or we're a bad meditator.
But that's not the case at all.
I'll offer what I offered to that student that day to you, which is, what if this was enough?
Like, what if simply witnessing the movement of the mind was enough?
In the book Why We Meditate, they talk about the waterfall experience, where when we first begin to sit with the mind, all of our thoughts come pouring in.
Similar to a waterfall, and this is a normal experience.
Meditation isn't a practice of ridding ourselves of our thoughts, but instead, being aware of those thoughts, noticing the state of the mind, and developing a greater sense of awareness, concentration, and insight.
So Class 3 came around, and I checked in with the class to see if anyone was able to remind themselves that being aware of our thoughts is okay, and a part of the process in practice.
The same student shared how being able to remind themselves of this led them to be more kind and compassionate as they meditated, which was something very new for them.
So new that they were moved to tears in realizing just how critical they have been towards themselves, not only in meditation, but in their everyday life too.
As they shared this, many hearts began to fill the Zoom screen and chat.
Almost all of the students were nodding and agreeing with what was shared.
So I want to reiterate again that having a lot of thoughts in your mind while you meditate is okay.
There's no such thing as a bad meditation or a good meditation.
What matters is your direct experience.
Having thoughts in the mind is a part of the practice, and to be honest, it's impossible to not have any thoughts in your mind, because that is even a thought.
By design, the mind is going to wander, analyze, evaluate, jump from past to the future, future to the past, ruminate, all these different things.
Our job is just to notice that movement, to be aware of the conditions of the mind, to study our focus on the presence, and let go of everything else.
When we do this, as my student experience, this also gives birth to a sense of kindness and compassion towards ourselves and even others.
So leaving you with this seed of awareness, if you find yourself learning how to meditate and are worried about all the thoughts in your mind, what if that awareness of those thoughts was simply enough?
