Our scented candles and air freshener bad for your health.
Thanks for asking.
Sented candles, air freshener and even scented cleaning products are all designed to make
your homes smell nice, clean and fresh, but using them can reduce the air quality of
your home and lead to a variety of potential problems.
What affects the quality of our air inside?
For many people, most of their time is spent indoors and according to the US Environmental
Protection Agency, EPA, levels of indoor air pollutants are typically more than three
times higher than outdoors.
Causes range from cooking, heating, scented cleaning products as well as products like candles,
diffusers or room sprays which are designed to make our homes smell nice.
The problem is that we are releasing chemicals into our homes and this can lead to a range
of problems from headaches to eye irritation to respiratory issues.
What are VCOs?
VCOs are volatile organic compounds.
In other words, they are the airborne chemicals that are released from candles as well as other
chemical products when used.
Air freshener for example releases more than 100 chemicals including VCOs which in turn
reacts the ozone inside our homes creating potentially toxic molecules such as formaldehyde,
aceteldehyde and free radicals.
All of which are classified as toxic or hazardous by agencies such as the EPA.
A study carried out across the US, UK, Australia and Sweden and published in the peer reviewed
platforms Spring & Link found that 32.2% of people have sensitivity to fragrance which
leads to problems ranging from headaches to asthma.
Should I stop using scented candles and air freshener?
Not necessarily.
If you love the coasiness or the smell from your favourite scented candle then using them
occasionally especially if you air out your home should be fine.
Also choosing a soy, bewax or other non-parafin candle is better for air quality.
Be mindful that candles are often prone to greenwashing and despite label saying things
like green, organic or natural they can still release potentially hazardous materials
into the air.
How else can I improve the air quality inside my home?
There are many ways to improve the air quality inside your home.
Firstly, make sure your home is properly ventilated and try to remove as much air freshener and
fragrance cleaning products as possible so as to reduce potentially harmful chemicals
from the atmosphere.
You could also use a high efficiency particle air filter known as a hepa filter.
Vacuum regularly use air purifiers and even add some green plants to your home.
All of this should help improve the air quality inside, making it safer for you, your family
and your pets.
There you have it.
