How do I know if I'm allergic to gluten?
Thanks for asking.
In recent years, gluten-free diets have become more and more popular.
No doubt you've seen free-from aisles in your local supermarket, and you can also get all kinds of gluten-free items in health food shops or online.
Some people have no choice but to adopt such a diet because they have celiac disease, a lifelong autoimmune condition which causes the body to attack its own tissue when gluten is consumed.
According to Celiac UK, the condition affects just 1 of the population, but other people also benefit from going gluten-free if they suffer from non-celiac gluten sensitivity.
The charity says that 10% of consumers now follow a gluten-free diet.
There have been claims that going gluten-free has benefits like weight loss, increased energy and improved overall health, but there's little in the way of research to back.
All that up causes health problems.
Gluten contains a protein called gliadin, and people with celiac disease are intolerant to that component in particular.
The resulting reaction damages the small intestine, which can have serious repercussions.
One example is poor nutrient absorption.
When the small intestine is affected vitamins, minerals and fatty acids are less well assimilated by the body.
This can ultimately lead to weight loss and severe deficiencies.
There are also digestive problems, primarily abdominal pain bloating flatulence, diarrhea and constipation.
Finally, there's an increased risk of developing certain diseases such as osteoporosis, type 1 diabetes, certain liver diseases and, in more severe cases, certain types of cancer.
Which foods contain gluten?
According to the Celiac Disease Foundation, gluten is a general name for the proteins found in wheat rye, barley and triticale, which is a cross between wheat and rye.
Unfortunately for those who are intolerant, it's found in many different types of food products, including bread pastries cakes pasta, most soups, flour and beer.
Contrary to popular belief, not all starchy foods contain gluten.
For example, rice and potatoes are gluten-free.
That's a very good question, and it often goes undetected for a long time because its symptoms vary a lot from person to person.
The symptoms are also pretty similar to those of other intestinal disorders like irritable bowel syndrome and lactose intolerance.
If your GP thinks you may have the disease, they'll likely ask you to start by doing a blood test.
A biopsy of the small intestine may be required to confirm the diagnosis.
Bear in mind that you shouldn't remove gluten from your diet prior to getting diagnosed, as that could affect the accuracy of the tests being done.
If you are diagnosed as having celiac disease, the bad news is there's currently no medication to treat it.
The only solution is to follow a strict gluten-free diet.
But the good news is that symptoms should improve significantly within a matter of weeks if you stick to it.
There you have it.
