Why are so many people suffering from AI anxiety?
Thanks for asking!
A Pew Research Center survey from August 2023 found that 52 of respondents were more concerned than excited about AI in daily life, compared with just 10 who felt the opposite.
It's not surprising really when you think about it.
After all, things that we don't understand tend to both fascinate and frighten in equal measure.
It's only very recently that AI has started becoming part of many people's everyday lives, and it's still hard to predict its full impact in the future.
The growing unease around artificial intelligence is known as AI anxiety, and that's a term we're only going to hear more and more about in years to come.
Writing in the Journal of the Association for Information Science and Technology in 2017, Deborah G Johnson and Mario Verdicchio described AI anxiety as the fear and trepidation being expressed about out of control AI.
Experts say it's rooted in the fear of AI being capable of making decisions independently of humans and perhaps even to our detriment.
At its core, it's the fear of being replaced by a machine that can think and reason as we do.
One of the biggest concerns is job loss.
Many people fear that AI could replace them in the workplace.
Others worry about the technology being used maliciously, posing threats to cybersecurity, for example.
Now, you could be forgiven for thinking that AI was invented when ChatGPT launched in late 2022.
But in reality, it's been around a lot longer than that.
It's the intense media focus since ChatGPT launched that's really amplified public anxiety over its implications.
The fear of being replaced by technology is also something that has cropped up with many different major innovations in the past.
AI anxiety is relatively recent, but it mirrors concerns that arose during the early days of automation back in the 18th century.
Workers feared that machines would take over their jobs, a sentiment now referred to as technostress.
You might say that AI anxiety is simply the newest version of this age-old fear.
Ultimately, it's more helpful to think of AI as a tool, a kind of super assistant, rather than a threat.
It can enhance human capabilities, but it's far from replacing human creativity and imagination.
Some jobs will undoubtedly become obsolete, but with time, AI will also create many new opportunities.
Back in 2020, a report from the World Economic Forum forecast that AI would generate 97 million new jobs by 2025, while displacing 85 million.
Many experts say that those who are anxious about AI should try using it themselves to better understand how it works.
