This is an All Ears English bonus episode.
Important update. Back in the office after summer, we're in your corner.
Welcome to the Business English podcast from All Ears English.
Get the English skills you need to achieve your dreams in global business.
For a presentation, a meeting, or your office party, this is Real Business English with your favorite American hosts, Lindsay and Michelle, coming to you from New York City and Colorado, USA.
Hey, Aubrey, how's it going today? I'm great, Lindsay.
How are you? Oh, my God. I have an important question for you today.
Are you ready? Yes, I'm ready. All right.
So do you feel supported at your company at All Ears English?
Do you feel supported on our team? Yes, this is huge.
Huge for me. I don't think I could work somewhere where I didn't feel supported.
And this has been big, right? With our team, with our coworkers, there have been several times where I'm busy as a mom of four kids and I need a flexible schedule.
And we have this open communication where I can let you or Jessica know if I'm in over my head, if I need to reschedule something or change something.
And I have never felt pushback or felt like that was... frustrating.
I always feel supported. It's been so wonderful.
That's awesome. I'm so happy to hear that.
We use key tools for communication, right?
We use things like 15-5, which is a tool where you're able to send in a questionnaire every week to check in.
You can rate how you're feeling, 4 out of 5, 5 out of 5.
A lot of companies are starting to implement these things to keep tabs and make sure we're all feeling good.
Because it's It can be a little intimidating to speak up and say something's wrong, right?
So there are other ways to do it. But the key here, Aubrey, is communication and being supported, having someone's back.
Absolutely, which is such a fun idiom. We're going to teach you guys two idioms today that mean to be supported or feel supported.
This is the first one, to have someone's back. you know, I definitely feel like all ears English has my back.
Lindsay, you've got my back, right? Which just means I feel supported.
Natives, native English speakers will often say this instead of saying like, I feel very supported.
Say, I feel like you've got my back. Yeah, I like that expression.
It's so native and natural. And I think it's kind of cool.
Like, I think it's it sounds kind of cool.
What do you think? Does it? Absolutely. I think so.
Yeah, right. I don't feel super old. I wouldn't feel like, you know, I think any generation could use this.
It's just sounds so natural. Yeah, I could see this coming from a lot of places nowadays from a friend to a friend, like, don't worry, I've got your back.
Like, you know, if you get into a fight with that person, I'll support you.
I'll, you know, I'll stick up for you. Or you could even see that from a modern company saying that to, like, for example, our payroll company, we use gusto for our payroll.
And I could see gusto writing something like we've got your back, we'll let you know when there are deadlines for state insurance or something.
I don't know, you know what I mean? Yeah, absolutely right.
It's not just a personal individual basis.
You'll hear it in ads or in maybe a company's branding because it does feel so supportive, but also a little more lighthearted.
Yes, I love it. So guys, write that expression down.
That is one of your key takeaways today, how to say that you support someone to have someone's back.
What would be the second one that our listeners need to know to talk about how supported they feel?
Well, I have an idea here because I was just thinking about with our courses and the changes we're making, like we've got your back, our listeners.
Right. So what if I save the second one for the end of the episode?
You guys need to listen to just a minute because I think it would be really fun to share some of the things we've added to our courses, which have made it so exciting.
I love that idea. So we're going to put that in our notes to come back at the end of the episode and let you guys know what that means.
But Aubrey, here's another key question.
Why do you think that most students who buy an online course don't actually complete that course?
What do you think? I mean, we've been around for a long time and we've seen patterns.
Yes, absolutely. And I think it really comes back to that expression we just taught.
If you feel like someone doesn't have your back, you don't feel supported.
If you're not getting practice opportunities, not getting feedback, you might just get less enthusiastic, less motivated about the course and you don't end up finishing and you lose out on so much great material you could have learned.
Yeah, I mean, there's such a moment that's so exciting at the beginning when we think we can do this, like we see what's in the course, we know that we have these gaps of things we have to be better at giving presentations in English, getting on the phone, having templates, but we know what we need to do.
And then we join that course. And then something falls off, right?
It's such a sad moment that we don't want to see happen to our listeners and our students.
Absolutely. This is why we've made some changes with our courses at All Ears English.
And we're very excited about it. Our students who've been joining are excited.
Because like always, with our business course, we have the same lessons and videos, the quizzes and transcripts.
There's always been so much in there for you guys, right?
Telephone and email templates, interviews with more than 25 native speakers with video lessons.
It's Fantastic. But there's some new exciting stuff, right, Lindsay?
Yeah. And by the way, just about those interviews, I know a lot of our students love that part of the course.
It's one of the things that makes the course super unique compared to other courses.
We sat down and interviewed 25 native speaking professionals in our networks, people we knew that were successful out in the business world.
We asked them... questions about their industry, about particular topics like socializing in English, giving presentations.
And we also got really cool advice on how to build your career.
So I love that part of our course. And that's there for everyone, no matter what plan they're in.
Right, Aubrey? Yes, absolutely. Which always has been amazing.
But we've only been able to offer six months access in the past.
You guys have probably heard that. With the new platform we're moving to, we can now offer lifetime access for all plans, which is so exciting.
This is huge. I'm so excited that we are finally offering lifetime access.
I want our students to be able to come back next year.
If you just didn't have time to get to it this year, we know you guys are busy.
You can come back next year now. And so that's been added to all the plans in the Business English Online course.
What else, Aubrey? We've also added some speaking practice and connection opportunities.
What do you think? What are we This is amazing, right?
First of all, we have fluency parties. You may have heard us mention them in the past.
This is with all All Ears English students, whoever, you know, if you're in any one of our courses, all plans.
They're so fun. We play a game, practicing speaking English, and then we'll learn a little bit of vocabulary and have a really interesting conversation to get deeper with us and the students.
I love that too. And I love at the end, what's unique about how we do these fluency parties is we invite you to stay on.
We actually ask you, are you able to stay on for 15 more minutes?
And sometimes that's where that connection happens, that extra moment.
Maybe there's some networking that can be done.
Someone in your industry that you could connect with on LinkedIn, for example, that's where that can happen.
So we love that. We let you stay on as long as you can.
So fluency parties, you guys are going to hear more about this fall because I'm super excited about them, Aubrey.
I know, me too. This is such a great way to meet speaking partners and really be able to deepen those connections where you're meeting other people who are learning English, who speak English.
That's not always easy to do in your life.
We're often doing episodes here on the podcast, giving you ideas for that.
This is the best way to find those speaking partners.
Yes. And on the same theme of building community, you know, we aren't in Facebook anymore.
In the past, we've had these Facebook groups, guys, separate Facebook groups for each course.
But now we are bringing everyone in under the same hood into a brand new community.
And you still have exclusive access to a community that is connected to your course.
But you also can connect with students from all the other All Ears English courses.
Yes, I love it. Right. It's not as exclusive.
You're going to meet students and all the other courses meeting all those English listeners.
You'll be able to, you know, see all of their questions and our answers and ask questions and communicate, share about your life, share vocabulary you're learning.
It's such a great place to practice English.
It's so good. And that's available in all of the plans.
So the basic and the personal coach plan of the Business English Online course, you get access to that community.
What about certificates, Aubrey? We want to know when we have completed something.
It feels good. Yes, it's so true, right?
We do provide a certificate for this course.
It does. It feels like that stamp to have finished, to feel like you've completed.
You have a amazing test to test your skills, see what you've learned.
And then with that final exam, you get feedback, you get your score, you find out how you did, and then you're able to get that certificate.
And that's something that wasn't even on our list before.
I can't believe we forgot about that. But now in all the plans starting now, you get in the bigger courses that you purchase, specifically this business English course, you get a direct feedback from a teacher on the final exam, no matter what plan you're in.
You get a message from the teacher, grading, scoring, and you'll just know where you're at.
Right, Aubrey? That is huge. I know, right?
I love doing these videos. You guys will submit a reflection and we are able to do like a welcome video with advice based on your goals, your reflection.
This is huge. I've done a lot of online courses and I didn't have this.
It felt pretty impersonal. And this is huge that we want to get to know you guys.
We want to know your goals and help with them.
Oh my gosh, it's so good. These are all like dreams that we've had to add these things into our courses.
And now we finally have and I'm so excited.
I mean, it not just the final exam touching base with a video message and a special grading feedback form, you also get a welcome message, right?
You submit a welcome reflection and you get a video back from your teacher right when you start the course.
Yes, it's so motivating. It's amazing. I love it.
And not only that, guys, we're very excited about this new speaking practice that we are offering.
You will get an invitation to weekly conversation clubs.
This is also an amazing place to meet speaking partners.
And this is just more open, right? Conversation starters, a chance to practice speaking with other students and then be able to meet up with them later.
It's that great opportunity just to meet other people who are learning English.
Yeah, I love this idea. So you had the first one the other day, a few people showed up and more and more students are going to start coming.
And guys, it's about connection. That's what we're all about here at All Ears English is human connection.
Connection, not perfection, but now we have a way to do it.
That is the key. We have a way not just to listen to the podcast and get the motivation, but you can put this into action now.
So Aubrey, there's one important thing our listeners need to know, though, about both of these plans.
And we're going to talk about how you can get even more feedback in a minute.
Prices are going up because it is so awesome now.
Yes, exactly right. We are discounting it right now to get everyone in.
But because these courses are so amazing, the price is going to go up August 21st at 11am New York time.
So you want to get in now. Yeah. guys. So if you want to get the basic plan of the Business English online course, go to allearsenglish.com slash business, lock in that lifetime access, that speaking practice feedback, the feedback from the teacher on your final exam and your welcome reflection and so much more.
Aubrey, that is the basic plan, allearsenglish.com slash business.
But what if we want even more support, more teacher feedback?
Yes, you guys, we have a personal coach plan, which gives you feedback from one of your teachers on six writing and six speaking practice tests.
It also comes with a weekly live Q&A where you can come and ask any questions with a teacher.
This is very exciting. I don't know of another course that offers this.
This is one of the biggest, most exciting changes here.
Yes, it's another dream that we finally implemented.
Our dream for you guys is to be able to sign on ask any question about your course at any point, right and get an answer right so that we can keep moving forward.
We need this human touch in our online courses.
I think, honestly, every that's what's been missing out in the world of online ESL classes, is there's not a lot of contact with human beings.
And that's what we do differently now at All Ears English.
Yes, right. We don't want it to just be modules where you feel like you're in a vacuum and you don't have that community.
We want to interact with you. We want to be able to give you this feedback to really help you improve your English.
We're so excited for this. So if you're interested in that personal coach plan, again, the price goes up August 21st.
So go to allearsenglish.com support. Yes, go there now, guys.
Again, August 21st, 11 a.m., New York time, and that's New York time.
So that might be a different time or even day in your hometown, in your world where you live.
Okay, Aubrey, so before we finish up, we gotta get back to that other expression that we promised our listeners we'd teach.
What is it? Absolutely right. This is the second idiom about being supported.
And it is to be in someone's corner. This is interesting.
It sort of comes from boxing where the coach right in the corner of the ring, telling them like you got this giving them advice, but we use this idiomatically all the time.
Oh, do you watch boxing? Are you a boxing fan?
I have watched new Creed movies, which are like part of the Rocky universe.
So I don't watch like live boxing, but I have watched some of these films and they're heartwarming and you absolutely see the coach in their corner cheering them on.
And that's what we want to do with these online courses.
We want to be in your corner, but you'll be able to use this all the time at work with friends to tell someone you're there for them. you support them, you can say, I'm in your corner.
Yeah. Pro tip. And so just as a pro tip, guys, here beyond these expressions and idioms, if you want to get a piece of cultural, like a cultural gem to be able to participate in references and talking about movies, watch Rocky.
It's such an important part of our movie history, at least in American culture and probably worldwide.
I mean, famous moments on the steps in Philadelphia where he puts his hands up.
I mean, the music, it's just so important as a cultural Lines we quote.
Absolutely. Have you seen this new series, the Creed movies?
No, I haven't seen them. Oh, you got to check them out, Lindsay.
They're so good. Michael B. Jordan is a fantastic actor.
He plays Apollo Creed's son. And so it's sort of like the legacy he left as a friend and competitor of Rocky.
It's so good. Ooh, I think we should do a bonus episode or another episode, maybe over on the All Airs English podcast about Rocky references.
Yes, let's do it. I feel like that is super important.
Absolutely. Let's get into it. So anyways, that was a side point.
But guys, you know, and even in business English, we need these cultural references.
This one could definitely come up. You know, maybe your boss would send you a photo of the Rocky icon, you know, with the hands up in the position, right?
The winning position on the stairs. Right, the celebrating...
After a campaign of some sort. 100%. 100%.
All right, Aubrey. So again, let's remind our listeners why they want to join now of the Business English course.
What do you think? Yes, guys. The price goes up August 21st.
And this new version of the course is so good.
A very exciting new user-friendly platform.
So for our basic course, go to allearsenglish.com slash business.
Yes, exactly. And then if you want that extra support, those 12 exercises of speaking and writing with feedback, plus that weekly Q&A that we mentioned, you want to go to that next level, that personal coach level, go to allearsenglish.com slash support.
I mean, now is the time, Aubrey. It's so true, right?
You guys work in English. You're wanting to improve your business English.
This course is fantastic advice from real natives who work in the business English world.
So many great lessons in vocab that we were able to pull from that and highlight.
So excited for you guys to check it out.
Yeah. I mean, especially because now that we're getting, you know, it's August, the last few weeks of August, people are going to, your coworkers are going to be coming back from vacation.
Now everyone is finally going to be in the office again.
You know, during the summer, things can be a little splintered with who's around, who's not.
Everyone's back in September. So now is where you're really going to need the social small talk skills, the leading a meeting skills, the presentations, don't you think?
Absolutely. Right. Or if you're preparing for an interview, there's so much great advice from natives who write HR leaders that you're going to be able to thrive in any part of the business world.
All right. So get that strong start back in the office, guys.
Again, go to these links that we've just said.
Rewind the episode if you need those links again.
And we're so excited to see you and support you, interact with you in these courses.
Good stuff, Aubrey. Awesome, Lindsay. It was fun.
Very good. You too. Talk to you soon. Bye.
